Alien Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Can someone help me with an L28 - just wanted a bigger engine for my 260 =) Thanks guys Quote
Riceburner Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 There's still one at centre road wreckers in a 280c sedan, with injection Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Alan, you can bore the L26 out to take 2.8ltr 86mm pistons - this will make it an L28. No need to find another engine then Quote
Scoota G Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Would it be a good idea to do a Sonic test first? Quote
Riceburner Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Would it be a good idea to do a Sonic test first? Don't want to hijak but if I bore an L28 to 89mm should I get a sonic test? Quote
Scoota G Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I had a sonic test on my L26 block and was advised against going for L28 pistons. The test was free. Quote
dat2kman Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 sonic is well worth it, saves spending heaps only to have something poke out the side, and, a smart machine shop may be able to offsett the bores to keep away from thin spots. if block is n42, plenty wall thickness, BUT check first. I have seen anything from 3mm to 7mm bore to water jacket in the one block Back in olden days, a certain workshop would go through approx 20 blocks (talking L20B four cylinder) to find a "good" one, with no sand core shift, and then punch it out bigtime, and a crank stroke to whack out 2350cc's in a L20B donk, running twin 48dcoes, etc etc, but ya gotta check first!!! peter mc Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I was horrified to find a 90mm bore in a L24 that i was asked to rebuild. Bores were so thin that they had severe blow-by from bore flex. Needless to say we didn't use that block any more, we brough an L28 and bored it to 88mm..... much nicer!!! Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 2.3? pffft. Les Collins got the old 'Grunter' L4 out to 2.5ltrs (& used a Z18 head) sonic is well worth it, saves spending heaps only to have something poke out the side, and, a smart machine shop may be able to offsett the bores to keep away from thin spots. if block is n42, plenty wall thickness, BUT check first.
