Gus, in reality a zed as a daily driver is not really practical for a first car.

I love my zeds and have 5 of them at the moment and have owned many more in the past, but never would use one as my daily drive or would I consider owning one as my only car!

My reasons for not having a zed as the only car:

1) fuel smell in the cabin! well known problem with zeds and can be very hard to rectify, not nice for continued use!!

2) window wipers almost non existant, makes driving in the rain VERY dangerous.

3) other small issues that may or may not happen such as fuel vapour lock etc.

Others will dissagree with me but my advise is NOT to get a zed as your only car

Cheers,

Cuong

I would have to disagree with the comment that they are not useable as daily drivers....

I fixed mine up when I was 18 ('finished' it at 21(?))...full rotisserie job etc (had a spare car...but still cost a bucket)

Anyway.....I have driven it every day (that I have been in the country) since then.....and it has been as reliable as clockwork.

(at least once the little problems to do with me having done the mechanics were sorted out!).

It only smells of gas when you drive with the Window's open...and even then, I recently went through it again and you hardly notice it.

The wipers are poor....but they can be upgraded....mine are stock but I have not had a problem in heavy rain.....the biggest problem I have had in the rain is rear wheel drive and a heavy foot (otherwise called stupidity).

Some people say the steering is heavy, but in a stock 240Z/260 that has the suspension sorted and is not running ridiculous tyres, you should not have a problem.

I have never had vapour lock in the Zed in Melbourne.....no extra fans/cooling....but it all works.

Really depends on whether you want to drive a 30 year old car everyday....if you accept that it will be a 30 year old car...then you will not have  aproblem....you can 'upgrade' bits (radio, stereo a/c interior etc but iy will never have a 'new car' feel)

Having said that....I have been in Japan and London driving rent a car for the last month and a half and will kill to drive my Zed again!!

The Zed in Okinawa is quite a nice one (the photo posted above)

id have to agree with Huw as i also own a 260z 2+2, i actually purchased a newer car for a run about and the thing is I'm now selling it as i drive the zed more than the celica. i have also never had vapor lock or any over heating issues it actually stays quite cool on those hot 45 degree days unlike many new cars i pass on the side of the road with there bonnet up overheated. as for the fumes they can be a little bit of a pain sometimes but i found if you turn the air on weather heating or cooling it stops, i believe it pressurises the cabin. one word of advice i will give you though go to a skid pan and learn to drive the car in the wet cause they get very wild sometimes and I'm running R14X50X245 tires on the rear standard is 185 i think.

cheers Pauly

Gus, you wont find a clean 2 seater for $10k...no ifs or buts..

I actually sat in that brown USA 280z left hander last weekend..its not a bad car. I just wish these dealers wouldnt wash it once a week and leave it sitting there full of water in the hatch chanel  ::)

I also had a good look thru the blue 240z with the white stripes that was also at edward lees...I wasnt so Impressed. The interior smelt of dampness, and there was a fine dusting of surface rust on the motor, i think he had $20k on it , also a LHD. I told the sales guy they should look at importing RHD zeds from japan & not LHD from california..

I was posting up the issues of driving an early zed to point them out to Gus.

I knew some of you would have jumped up and said that you can drive these cars as a daily, but thought I'd make a potential buyer aware of the issues.

Each to their own I guess.
