drifta1600 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 was there ever a factory t/top 260z 2+2?? For sale here- http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Datsun-260z-1977-2-2-Sports-/220634132466?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Cars&hash=item335ed1aff2 Quote
reverendzed Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 He's obviously a 'factory' specialist with an 'aftermarket' understanding! No 't' or any other alphabetical 'factory' option was stupidly applied to the S30. This looks like a perverted ZX retrofit :'( Rev. Quote
zanzee01 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 While we're on the "was there ever such a thing" topic - does anyone know if the 260z bonnets came out from factory with vents? Or are they an aftermarket creation? Can't remember ever seeing one with them when they first came out.... Ta : ) Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 8, 2010 Moderators Posted July 8, 2010 I think from Oct 76 on, the flutes where on the bonnet; before that non-fluted. Quote
dalee Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 I think from Oct 76 on, the flutes where on the bonnet; before that non-fluted. As above, my understanding was the vents were introduced along with the flat top carbies and emission controls in an attempt to alleviate some of the vapor lock, and higher engine bay temps. Quote
Roberto Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Not the case. Early 260Z's had flattops and non-vented bonnets. Quote
reverendzed Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Yep! I've got a very early number 74 260z and it had the large flat tops and non vented bonnet. Quote
gilltech Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 In all my reference material I have never heard of a T roof on a 240/260/280, but of course it's possible - I've learnt with American cars that plenty of exceptions to the generally published guidelines for models exist & are actually more numerous than one would ever think & not just prototypes - factories with car-construction resources are capable of creating all sorts of variations for senior staff or preferred customers or to showcase at special events. (There would have to be some careful modification to the roof structure in this instance). And there are, or perhaps were, also plenty of talented bodyshops around. Someone might have decided to emulate the 280ZX Targa that came out a couple of years later on their baby. Ditto Rev, my very early 260 2-seat had flat-tops all as part of it's basic emissions controls. I have a book that states that the very last of the 240's in 1973 were similarly equipped which was one reason that the '71& '72's were preferred. The 260 & 280z bonnet vents were a factory initiative in later years due to vapor lock problems reported in hot climates like Arizona etc, & elevated underhood temperatures thanks to more creature comforts like A/C being fitted. Lots of people have retro-fitted vents of various types for that reason. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 9, 2010 Moderators Posted July 9, 2010 All 260Z's had the flat top carbies and the vapour lock problem until the flutes were put in as per Dale's post. Quote
. Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 regarding the T top 260, I quite like it but I don't see the point if the door windows still have frames!!! It can't be a ZX retrofit because they are the wrong shape and have no glass. Quote

brianz Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Hey, this looks like one I looked at when I was looking for my 2+2. The roof was catchy but the rest of the car left a lot to be desired. Too much rust, too much work. I doubt that it will ever be seen back on the road. It wasn't running at the time either. It was sold for $3250 but I picked up my 100% complete, almost running 2+2 for just $4000 and I think it was a much better deal even if it doesn't have a Targa roof. My car was parked for about 7 years but undercover and the only rust is around the hinges to the hatch. I am having enough trouble finding time to get this baby back to registration standard but I would not have had a hope with the other car. Oh, I am also setting up triple Dellorto carbies on a redline manifold with extractors. I have got some info from other members on the possible carbie setup (jets etc) but any advice that anyone has would be gratefully accepted. The car has matching numbers and I am keen to keep it that way so the motor will stay pretty much standard ( except for the carbies and extractors). Brianz Quote
wogboy Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 so you did go and have a look at the car in person ...... the car was run when my dad had it checked out but due to dirty fuel did not run for long and in regards to the targa top having a hard time to be road worthy i believe ill have some one to blue slip the car and to get an engineering certificate Quote
pauly_adams Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 if i were you i would get that 240z advert and take it in with you when you blue slip it Quote
wogboy Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 The guy that will be doing the blue slip will be the same one that will be doing the engineering certificate on the targa Quote
