Well for all we know someone backed out of the sale at the last minute.

 

You have a point though, that engine will be worth far more to him in the future if it's matching numbers.

I dont understand your logic here..

 

Well since it's a 30+ year old car you may have noticed the market price of them is increasing in value. Original cars are almost always going to be worth a fair bit more than a modified car. If you keep the original engine stored somewhere you will always have the option to return it to original.
