GV260 Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I'm in the process of rebuilding my L28 race motor and would like to know your views on what to do with the rocker cover re presentation wise. Do I: 1. polish it (looks like too much bling for my taste) 2. ceramic coat it as per the exhaust system 3. powder coat it red (the body colour is red) or black 4. any other suggestions Does anyone know if I can powder coat it excatly the same body colour red or is only a generic red available? NZeder Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Or just get one of the late late black plastic covers Black crinkle would be good on a race engine too. Quote
NZeder Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Here is a pic of one of the guys here in NZ cover - I like what he did with this one Quote
1600dave Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I did mine with VHT black wrinkle paint - cleaned it perfectly, sanded, polished then masked the bits that ended up being not painted, sprayed it, carefully removed masking while paint was still wet, then cooked it in the oven for an hour at low temp (as per the instructions on the can) and it came out perfect. Its actually quite a bit "blacker" than the photo's show. Quote
GV260 Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 I do like the look of the black w/crinkle espically with a black coloured block which I have. My only concern is with keeping it clean - is it hard to do so? Quote
lightmaster240z Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Sorry powercoat only come in set colours. I would be concerned with it discolouring over time from the heat. I like the idea of the red of the matching the car thou. post a pic when you get it done. Bruce Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I like the black wrinkle paint but as stated above can be pain to clean. U can paint it same colour as ur car but do it in 2pk. I had my covers done in marble red and green on another car both in 2pk and still look great. 6yr on the s14 and 3yrs on the z no signs off degrading or peeling. Preparation is the key and using proper etch primmer on the alloy. I try find few pics and post it for u. Quote

My only concern is with keeping it clean - is it hard to do so? My old timing cover was also finished in wrinkle paint, I used to hit the whole engine with degreaser if it got too dirty and it came up good as new. The new engine (touch wood) doesn't leak oil yet so hasn't got dirty. The only problem I had with the old one was that it looked tatty because the wrinkle finish had worn off in a few spots, where the fuel line / spark plugs leads / etc had rubbed on it over the years, and it had flaked off in quite a few spots (mainly in tight corners where I suspect it wasn't thoroughly cleaned when it was first painted). It had been in the car for 20 years though and it was only the last few years that it was starting to look ordinary. Quote
