GV260 Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I heard that someone was recently pulled over by the police and because there aftermarket steering wheel did not have a cushion pad in the middle as per the original steering wheel their Z was therefore unraodworthy? I've checked the VicRoads web site and yes, this is correct so beware! Refer to section 7 in the attached link. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/CC48FC10-4D57-4F04-82E1-3BD72EF88340/0/VSI8.pdf Note also that as per section 9 wheel spacers are not permitted (unless fitted as original equipment). DAT392 Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Yeah, I was told the same thing by a copper about my steering wheel last year and how a similar wheel had killed someome after having a head on with a tree at speed.I figured the tree might have had something to do with it! Quote
C.A.R. Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Load of bollocks. If your head come far enough forward in an accident in an early Zed, you'd have more to worry about than just your head hitting the steering wheel... Quote
Scoota G Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Yea that would be the front of the car coming toward you as it folds. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 7, 2010 Moderators Posted May 7, 2010 It won't be the wheel that would kill, it will be the sudden stop. Cop probably had a bad day and had to pick on something.. Quote
mayhem Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 and i took the cops to court over the same thing ....... guess who came out on top !! ;D its bull shit! Quote
Quandary Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Cars of these vintage are well known for accidents where the steering column comes at the driver in an accident. What is a small cushion going to do? Would make more sense to drive around with a helmet. Quote
Stivva Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Its not necessarily true. Could be argued that the factory steering wheel offers no little to no padding and there for a replacement similar is acceptable. They certainly did not have big padded centres like todays cars. Quote
620Z Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Never heard of it. I've been pulled over a million times plus had a few road worthy's. My steering wheel has never been mentioned. Quote
GV260 Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 Craig, that's only because each time you've lifted your skirt for the officer ............. ! Stivva, it doesn't matter whether or not it is "true" re safety reasons, the reg irresepctively requires the replacement wheel to have padding. If not and the officer knows this, you're vehicle is techinically unroadworthy! Quote
620Z Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 If that's the case just get a cushion out and tape it to the wheel. Quote
GV260 Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 Good thinking - maybe grandma can do a nicely embroided Z logo...... Quote
