mtopxsecret6 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Hey guys, i started to notice last time i ran my 26 that it was running rough. I used a lead checker tonight and noticed that cylinder 1 and 3 have very little spark. The others are fine, gave me a wallop when pulling the leads off.. though not 1 and 3. Does this mean distributor time? thanks. Quote
hunterzed Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 As stated above work from your plugs back to your distributor. Swap a couple of plugs over then a couple of leads then check and clean the dizzy cap. If you're still running points then this may have an effect as well. I've seen a bad coil do a similar thing as well. Where the duty cycle on the coil was just about stuffed and created a pattern with an intemittant spark. Steve Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 Ok, ill process of elimination. Though i have recently bought new plugs, leads. Which is why it lead me to the dissy. Ill buy a new coil too i guess. Quote
hunterzed Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Check for faults and obvious stuff first before spending the coin. Have a look at the posts on the inside of your dizzy cap for corrosion and wear as well. Clean them up with some emery paper if they aren't worn too much. Otherwise you may need a new cap and rotor. RB30X Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 How easily available are dizzy caps these days for the L series. Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 the dissy cap and posts seem to all look fine, the rotor button seems fine, i went through and cleaned it all up when i first tried kicking it all over. All the new parts and the cleaning ive done has only have a few hours running since i started the car some time ago. I think it might be the coil possibly. i might try that first. Quote
peter t Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Have two spare coils if you want to try them before out laying $ Quote
FLEXZED Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 hey mate not sure were you are but have spare electronic dizzy and coils if you need to try Loui Quote
peter t Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Just click on the little man under posts and you can see where we are. Hope this helps. I am closer to him than you Loui. Quote
chris240 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 fairdinkum Ive got a similar problem !! my L24 is running rough ...one day perfect 4-5 days latter (when next started the motor) running rough down low.. Im curious whats the best way to test leads...a mate said to pull off the leads and using a multimeter set to 2M Ohms, put the prongs on each end take note of the readings...he said that a longish lead should get a reading of 14-17 and anything in the mid 20's means the lead may have a break. problem is when set to 2M ohms im getting different readings..my lead readings are: 1.....4.37 2.....3.74 3.....3.91 4.....4.26 5......4.68 6......4.77 1 being the shortest, 6 the longest...what can I decifer from these figures ?? does this mean my lead no1 is a bit dodgy ? Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 by those figures.. your not even geeting 14-17 i the first place?? Ive got a lead checker.. which has a light on it.. and it flashes when it has a signal.. and how bright it is determines how strong the spark.. etc.. hmm.. try a spare coil.. thats not a bad idea.. hunterzed Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Ohms is resistance so the low numbers are a good thing. The higher the reading the more resistance you have in your leads which means you have less spark being delivered to your plugs. Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 i do understand ohms law. I'm off to buy a coil this morning. see if that fixes the problem. Quote
hunterzed Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 No worries. I must have misread your post. I was under the impression that you thought his figures were low. Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 Ok, I didn't buy a coil, i got a new rotor button, and points. That didn't fix the issue. So i pulled out all the plugs, and they were all black and covered in goo. So i cleaned them up and now its running on all six again. I think the carbs need a good tune. Quote
hunterzed Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 This link has no doubt been posted before but here is a quick guide to reading your plugs. http://www.xenons130.com/plugs.html Steve Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 Yeah,it's fouling from too much fuel. Quote
