As the topic suggests, I have a couple of NOS L28 turbo pumps for sale. Still in Nissan boxes. Located in Melbourne, postage at your expense.

$120.

High volume, std pressure. You are better off shimming the springs rather than running the motor sport spring so that you can get the correct pressure for your engine. Not all engines run the same oiling system, coolers, clearances or oils so the motorsport springs are a little bit 'generic' for most engines.

If any in Brisbane are chasing one, I have a couple avail.

Yes the impeller and stator ( rotating pump parts) are taller, hence more volume, and it was quite common to put small washers say 3 or 4 mm behind the single spring to increase pressure, but keep eye on spring coil surface, they wear thin then break, better option is the double spring arrangement with no washers.

im going to askt eh obviously numb headed question.

i am converting from carb to efi turbo

its an L28.. i assume the oil pump is standard

do i need one of these?  or one of soemthing else, or none of either?

sorry for the thread hijack

Nah, a hijack should be a help to you,

if you want stock volume flow and oil pressure just stick with what you got, ie hot engine, and low flow at idle of just above 10 or so PSI.

These are taller in the impeller body, ie more volume, and with a couple of washers behind the spring higher pressure bypass settin, to give slighlty higher pressure into motor. much better!

They are standard fitment to USA 280 ZX turbo engines.

All L series oil pumps will bolt onto L series engines.

You can simply try the washer trick with your stock as fitted now unit, it is the big 21mm? short bolt at the bottom of your oilpump, just undo, and the spring falls out, keep the plunger in there, and place washer(s) say 3 or 4 mm thick inside the hollowed out end of the short bolt, then put spring back in, and bolt up.

It is highly recommended that engine NOT be running in this process, otherewise have a video camare running, it is fun to see!!!!!

You will notice a slight increase in oil pressure only, ( no better volume) as you have stiffened the relief bypass valve spring tension.

This is an very old Stew Wilkins/Datsun rally engine  mod!

So by having a higher flow rate and pressure of oil what is happening to improve performance? Does the higher flow rate of oil mean the engines internal heat distribution is better? My engine lubrication knowledge is lacking.

Pretty much Steve, the higher volume of oil will pull the heat out of the engine and also get rid of bits and pieces a bit quicker also, and others will improve on my lame explanation as well. The higher pressure will also help get the opil around the motor to get it lubricating pretty much all parts better.

And as an aside when things go bang, with a high volume pump you get a big mess quicker and with a high pressure pump the mess goes further.... ;D

But, and there will be a but, if you build a  full race motor with forged internals and well clearanced for reduced frictions etc, and little tiny gaps for the black liquid will ooze out quicker, hence you need more vol and pressure,  and oil filters that dont have the silly 8psi relief bypass, ( just need to ensure good warm up before giving it a bootfull)

My L28 at 290hp at fly is "clearanced" for race, it wont last too long, but that is what I want, same goes for my FJ24 four cylinder, at 295hp at fly. both are stripped/lifed at approx 80 hours.

My U20 motor is more criticla it is lifed and stripped at 50 hours race use.

Oil and its movement and ability to move in these situations is fairly critical.

In fairly normal, with some enhancements done, road going motors, this is nowhere near as critical, but these oil pumps do help heaps.

Turbo pump arrived today, now just the oil cooler, adapter and lines to find!

Many thanks Datzed.

Is it possible to pick the difference in standard and high volume pumps from the outside ? I believe the impellor is taller in the turbo pump, is the housing also taller to match ? Or did Nissan somehow manage to stuff the taller impellors into the same sized housing ?

RB30x, your mad if you run a sandwich plate setup like than on anything other than a street engine. You really need to relocate the oil filter before you run your oil cooler and have a nice adapter that fits over the oil filter boss on the block. In my experience the sandwhich plates have very narrow passages for the oil to pass through and are not good for flow. Aluminium race components make a very nice adapter, have a chat with them. Of course the old saying applies, 'you get what you pay for'.
