I'm looking at my 240Z wondering how to correctly do the interior in OEM finish.

My questions are; 1) did all 240Z's imported into Australia have the black loop carpet interior, and 2) did all cars have the straps for holding cargo in the rear, or was this just specific to the series three cars (ie after 72)?

Reason for asking is; My first 240Z (think 73 model) from the early 90's had; a) factory tie straps, b) masonite round spare wheel cover, and c) loop pile carpet in the rear. However looking at Edward Lee's genuine low mileage 918 orange 71 240Z today on youtube, i noticed; a) it did not appear to have the straps, and 2) it did not appear to have loop pile carpet, but instead black vinyl as the rear shelf floor covering material.

I've also noted that despite the strange holes we found (and closed) in the rear shelf area (we determined to be a tow bar mount), there are NO small bolt holes that indicate the installation of factory retainer straps. I presume the cars that did have these straps had the retainer straps bolted to the actual metal floor of the cars, through the carpet / vinyl.

Hoping someone might have the correct answers on this (maybe Alan).

Cheers

Adam

First question you need to ask is Edward Lee's 71 240z actually a 240z or is it a Fairlady Z?? There is a big difference. Also if E Lee's car is a Fairlady Z then is it a ZL or just a Z. The stock Fairlady Z had vinyl and as you pointed out other bits missing (the clock was an option) bumpers were different as were the tail light surrounds the list goes on.

So this is why I stated "First question you need to ask is Edward Lee's 71 240z a 240z or a Fairlady Z?"

Best to compare with an Aus spec 240z if that is what you have. I can tell you that my 260z which is a General RHD Export RS30 which is different to the Aus spec RS30 - it does not have the emission stuff that the Aus spec 77 RS30 has/had but the loom is the same and most other options are the same.

Just saying you need to compare an Apple with an Apple which you are but we are talking about how does a pacific rose compare to royal gala (if you get my drift ;))

Adam.

My 240 is Australian delivered, plated 2/71 with chassis # 728. It has cargo straps and Masonite spare wheel cover. Cant vouch for the carpet though.

I looked into this some years back when I was resto'ing my old 240-

All had luggage straps

All carpet was loop pile

and the masonite spare wheel disc

As a matter of interest.........there were a few 240's that arrived that did not have a chassis number stamped on them.

Lindsay Drife has one at the Z Shop, looks to be a late model (diff moved back and storage bins) but no chassis number

This makes me think that E Lee's car might be as I expect a S30 as in Fairlady Z and the Standard model that has been re-badged as a 240z. This was done a number of time here in NZ back in the 70's. A number of people imported Fairlady Z into NZ, remove the tail lights and badges, installed the 240z badging and tailights with the chrome strip (I think that was the differences between the Z and ZL Fairladies or it might have been that the tail lights did not have the tri colour but just red and amber ie not clear for the reversing lights, whatever the reason it might have been a NZ legal requirement for the white reversing lights that the 240z vs Fairlady Z) and they were sold as Datsun 240z which they were/are not.

The reason this was done was for the extra $$ a 240z would get, but I think in the 70's it was not done for this reason just to get a S30 was the reason and people had no idea what a Fairlady Z was but could relate to the 240z badging - still but this stuff happened and still happens.

My old HS30-00016 had the straps, and loop carpet (a bit thread bear if I recall) and the masonite spare wheel disc also and this did not have the tool boxes (go figure with such a low number)

does anybody have a photo of the where the OEM straps were attached to in the car? I will need to drill holes, as my car appears not to have any holes for these straps. Also, are the straps used to hold down the carpet (as in, is there a bracket bolted through the carpet into the floor), or do they just come through the carpet in slits?

Any photos would be helpful.

G'day Adam,

I'm sure(my fading memory permitting) you will find that the strap fasteners were bolted to the metal floor under the carpet and the straps then passed through a slit in the carpet to allow the carpet to be raised and give access to the spare wheel. Otherwise it would be a pita to get to the spare. Anyway, it's been many years since I sold my 240, but someone on here who currently owns one will be able to confirm this for you.

Good luck, regards, Lloyd.
