Huw Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Well....have decided that will need to pull gearbox in shed as can't be bothered trailering to workshop and driving might be asking for trouble (have 1,3,5 but no 2,4, Reverse. anyway.....I do have someone who really knows what they are doing, but i've got to set up and begin the process... I plan on putting front end of car either on ramp stands or jack stands and then jacking the rear up and putting that on stands.... now, I'll probably need to buy a proper trolly jack rather than the el-cheapo one i have now to get the height i need..... to get to the point, opinions on this method? has anyone pulled gearbox in the shed? (without hoist!) any suggestions for getting it high enough (safely!) Cheers Huw Quote
thehelix112 Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Yes I've done it. Axle stands will be apples, and I used an el-cheapo jack to lower the box down. Don't forget to get a piece of wood appropriately sized to jam under the rear of the engine or it'll tilt over backwards (the mounts are way forward of CoG). Luckily my turbo is only 1" from the firewall so it didn't tilt far. Good luck, Dave Quote
Zeddophile Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 yeah, its pretty easy. Used a couple of blocks of wood on top of the cheap trolley jack i had, to get good bit of height, stuck the stands under the sides, and away you go. Used the trolley jack to roll the box back and lower it, and a bottle jack (or scissor jack, if you have a jap car as a daily) to hold the back of the engine up. Quote
warrenz Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Hi Yep, did the same as Zedophile worked quite well. Out and back in a day with a new thrust bearing. But you will need an assistant. Good luck Warren Quote
Huw Posted August 5, 2006 Author Posted August 5, 2006 well all done.... gearbox is now sitting on floor in shed, waiting to head off to the doctors.... came out ridiculously easy (and i didn't break anything!!) think getting it in may be harder but that's not for a week or two yet :-) Thanks for all the help. Huw Posted August 28, 2006 Author Posted August 28, 2006 Well , gearbox back from doctor, had a small 'freshening up' as the problem of no 2,4, R was caused by a self tapper jammed down the selector bit out f sight (where gear shift goes) so I feel very silly but gave everyone at home a good laugh! month delay by a F....... self tapper! lesson learnt tho. Bruce Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Huw, where did you take your gearbox, and would you recommend them? My 5spd feels like the synchros are on the way out (have to double the clutch to get it in to gear on changing down) otherwise it grinds into gear. Can anyone else recommend anywhere? cheers Bruce Quote
