im planning on painting my 260 2+2 in a week or two and i have a couple questions....

 

1)ive read up a few topics about media blasting etc vs soda blasting and it looks to me like soda blasting has less risks of damage and etc. but just wanted to know whats the downsides to it?

 

2) im also thinknig about painting the z a san marino blue

did you call the soda blasing buy.

 

if you are only doing a respray and so forth, you don't need to go down to bare metal at all.

yeah went and seen ben stone on the weekedn, had a big talk and he sounds real good.

 

he says that because i wish to go another colour and because of the state the paint is atm i should just go bare to bare metal.

sweet, yeah he is going to be coming over sometime to asses my car.

 

Good luck, what sougth of money was it going to cost according to ben?

haha yeah he loved the car.

 

umm $80 an hour for the soda blasting, and then $30 per hour for paint and prep etc.

 

so all up a few grand which i think is pretty good but that includes the whole car, engine bay, doors etc

$30 per hour for body work is ok, speccialy if you think $2000 = 66 man hours.

yeah well he said he is busy for a few weeks but im going to try and con him into starting on mine soon, as i want it before xmas (unlikely).

go soda blasting.Bare metal is great start off new, bog what has to be and repair any more defects. Remeber to allow lots of time since u not a spray painter or panel beater. Remeber its all about layring prep it proply so the end result is good. Bare metal to the primer stage is the most important.Also dont get your heart stuck on one color there r many kick ass colors out there go 2 pack and work from there

Ok first thing, if you're going to bare metal finish the car then forget Soda Blasting.

 

Secondly, and more importantly to all those looking at doing this, the soda used is actually an alkali with a pH of around 8.4. What's this got to do with anything you ask, and so you should.

 

Unless you get absolutely all the soda residue cleaned off your body before you start the moment that stuff gets wet you can say goodbye to all your hard work. It will start to eat away at your precious metal faster than you'll find and repair it, it usually seeps through under the paint work as it's sealed underneath and you'll notice bubbles pretty quick.

 

A good fine/medium garnet is the best solution.

 

Even if you're only taking off one layer, which is where the soda comes into play, you need to make sure to wash/clean and dry the whole car before you start any prep work. But if that's all you're doing then I'd still suggest either an orbital sander or vibrating sander with some 180/240 grit paper and a little bit of elbow grease.

The is nothing wrong which soda blasting back to bear metal is you are using a good operator not expecting it to remove rust [abrasive blasting is what's used] and use proper methods of removing residue using vinegar and proper paint prep.

XQRTR has it right, I remember tossing up acid dip, soda blasting, media blasting and sand blasting.

In order of preference:

 

Sand blasting is just old school and just warps metal....if your not stripping the bottom of a ship of barnacles dont use it.

 

Soda is soft on the metal but requires a dip afterwards...ie: its good for external panels but unfortunately it gets into all of the cracks and crevices and can cause a world of problems esp if you put a rust proof over the top of it!

 

The last two are open to argument:

 

Media blasting is will not warp panels and wont leave residue....but it also wont remove rust from inside of panels....

 

Acid dipping will remove all rust form all open panels and from inside of panels etc........this is great as you will know where your problems are. People will say it will eat hole in your car...yes that's true but only where the rust is...but ask yourself would you rather know where your rust is and fix it or have no idea and just spray over it.

 

The call is yours re the choice between Media and Acid dipping but it is really horses for course....what are you trying to achieve...full strip go acid......just a respray then just go for the media.....

 

The best info I have found on this stuff is from commodore/ford/Holden etc forums...

 

 

Just focus on getting out the rust and you should be fine

Do you know anywhere that will do the acid dip? And how much it is?

talk to most pannel/resto shops and they should be able to point you in the right direction....

 

Its not to much from what I recall about $500 - $1000
