V8Datto Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I'm currently getting some 240z panels sandblasted (garnet) and would like to know what preparation they need before I spray them with epoxy primer, should I sand them quickley by hand and them prep wash them? I'm asuming spraying over the untouched sandblasted surface is a no no unless I'm using POR15 panels include roof skin, rear wheel arches and rear hatch skin, Quote
reverendzed Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 What i do is prepsol everything and then etch prime over all bare metal. remember that all primer is porous and will only keep so much moisture out, so it shouldn't be left to long before you continue the process through to finish. (after using prep wash of coarse) or do you need to give it a light sand to remove any garnet/sand stuck into the steel? Quote

Considering he is doing the work I dont think he would have left out that bit, but then again...?!? Quote

Im planning the same with mine, but you mentioned epoxy. When using a 2pac hi-fill or acrylic primer, you MUST use an etch primer, the etch primer actually gives a stable base for these 2 different types of priming systems to bond too, however if Im reading this right when you say epoxy, then your beater is reffering to polyester. With polyester primer / surfacer and etch primer isnt used, and trying to do so would be a disaster as etch primer has a chemical reaction with polyester which does not allow it to bond. What polyester is as a matter of fact is a sprayable version of body filler, it adheres best to bare metal surfaces, problem with it is that you "CANNOT" rub it wet as like body filler it is pouress and will allow moisture through to the substrate metal. Polyester must be rubbed dry, after which a hi-fill surfacer is layed over the top to seal it in and allow wet rubbing to create the final pre paint surface. If anyone watches OVERHAULING or American Hot Rod on Foxtell, this is the method they use. Dont be put off by the fact that its like a sprayable body filler, as a matter of fact it creates a harder surface that wont shrink later on and has excellent bonding properties as opposed to Hi-Fill which if incorrectly applied and surfaced (AS in rub through during wet sanding / bloicking) can lead to disaster in the final finish. When I bare metal a car, prior to application of any metal surfacer, I always use a dioxidine wash which is a mild acid which neutralises any impurities in the metal prior to presol wipe down, but this is totally optional. I will be using polyester on mine, with a final hi-fill surfacer. Around 3 weeks ago I was chatting with my fiances cousin who shots colour for a living about what to prime the Z with when it was blasted and he recommend DP40 epoxy primer above all else. I have had a glance through the product info sheets and it seems I have to use the PPG primer surfacers and high build primers. Cheers for bringing it to my attention as I more than likely would have tried to spray over it myself and had a mess on my hands! Quote

Your welcome, I have a buddy who is a PPG rep coming out to see my shell soon, he is going to basically tell me the best range of products to use, so will be happy to share that info with you guys. However I dont intend using PPG finishes on top, this isnt a problem however as you will find most of them are compatable, just make sure that the paint finish you do use is formulated and designed for Australian UV ratings as many like Glasuruit for instance are designed for a cooler Northern Hemisphere UV environment.
