There is some triple solex carbies on ebay currently(without manifold). Just wondering if anyone has had any experience/comments/etc about them?

cheers

Hi Bruce, I believe twin solex carbs were found on the Datsun roadsters. They were also a sports option in the 70's for the 240z.

I believe the story goes that Solex was bought out by Mikuni who were possibly bought out by Dellorto later on. I'm not sure if that's 100% correct.

Anyhow the original Solex carbs are very similar to the Mikuni's only with slight differences and parts can still be sourced if you try hard enough.

I'm not sure what size they are most Triples I see are 40's and not 44's. Triple Mikuni 50's are very rare and sought after (I know I wanted a set) however I believe the 44's can be bored to a larger size so I settled on them.

I am yet to have any experience with the Triple's but from what I've read they are generally easier to maintain tune with than Webers but it's all personal preference.

I'd only use triples if I had done some port work and installed a bigger cam otherwise it's not worthwhile in my opinion as the twin 240z SU's perform very well and use less fuel.

For me I would want to get the whole package including manifold in one. At least you have half a chance at getting it running if its been in use lately. These carbs are around and they do come up in different forums/ classifieds occasionally. Another thing, you need to know a race tuner who knows and stocks parts so you can keep them cooking, they will go off with work (read racing around).

cheers

I really dont undersatnd why peolpe are so worried about triples. be it delorto's, webers or solex. They srnt that hard to look after if they are setup properly to start with.

The problems peolple have are as follows:

They go out of tune because peole put crap linkages on them that bend or flex or are not locked off so one or two move a little which causes the butterflies to be out of alignment with each other (only have to differ a tiny bit to stuff the tuning up)

They are jetted wrong to start with!

wrong fuel pressure

or just old and need new kit put through them.

It doesnt matter which type you buy as long as you find the right person to setup them.

I raced for 3-4yrs with a set of triple 45 webbers and because they were setup with the right jets, linkages etc to start with all I had to do is theoccasional linkage adjust an they ran perfect with no other tweaks

I have also run a set of delortos on my road car for about 2 yrs and they never went out of tune!

In my experiance the best delorto tuner is Datsun performance centre in Cheltenham. You pay a bit but he know his stuff. I am pretty sure he does webbers and solex aswell. He did my deortos and I will get him to do my new solexs

anyway thats my two cents worth

also I brought the triple solexs mentioned of ebay and I will let you know how I go. but I tink for $280 they are a bargin

I'm not sure if Datsun performance centre is still open....

someone in the trade said he may have retired (if we thinking of the same bloke (used to race the fairlady roadsters)...

If he's still open, wouldn't hesitate at all, from everything i've heard he knows his stuff backwards.

Well done on the purchase. Sounds like a really good price.

Had you seen them before I put the post up?

Hi

Try Redline manifolds

DATSUN

PART NO. 12-3126 Manifold to suit Datsun 240Z, 260Z, 280Z. Designed to accept 3 x 45DCOE Weber Carburettors.

LINKAGE KIT P/NO. 42-2626

Website - http://www.redlineauto.com.au/opening_page1.htm

I was bidding on a set of triple Dellortos recently and gave up as they exceeded the money I was prepared to spend. They went for $860 with manifold and linkages. That was probably a good buy but a set a few months earlier went for around $750.

There seem to be a lot of single and twins for sale at reasonable prices.

What are the likley problems (other than jetting) of buying individual used carbies ? People talk about a matched set, or production from the same batch but how much difference does it really make ?

The basic question - is it a good idea to make up a set from individual purchases of the same carby ?

yer good question. I was thiniking the same before I got a set of three.

I spose if you got em for around 40-60$ a carbie you couldnt go to wrong but I am not sure on the differences on a "matched set" if they are truly matched.

I will ask around and see what I can find out

sorry forgot to mention

The linkage kits listed above. Ok this is a perfect eg of why people have tuning issues with triples.

The kit listed on ebay has shitty plastic joints and crap pressed steel linkages that will without a doubt move/bend and make for bad tuning.

On the other hand if you check out the linkage kit on redline website the have proper rose joint style joints and are all round better quality(heap better) be intersting to know the cost though

I used to have a Datsun 2000 Sports with Twin Solex's and you guys are all right provided they are set up correctly no problems in the world however the rubber insulators on these carbies between the manifold and carbies as they get older do sometimes suck air but other than that perfect. In those days Gordon Dobie Ex Datsun head racing mechanic also Datsun performance Centre was the man then and is still the man now if you want those carbies set up correctly I would certainly recommend him I am surprised he hadn't retired years ago but each to his own, I wonder if he still has his 2000 Sports and 240Z still? ...mmm!

Hi Lynton, I believe the previous owner of my 240z used to take it to him. I would very much like to find out where he is and who has his contact details. I'd love to chew his ear off 8) talking about Zcars and roadsters but also about my stroker motor plans.

HI Gav,

I have been dealing with Gordon Dobie for the last month or so to sort out my triple 40mm Dellortos. Yes Gordon is retired now but has a wealth of knowledge to pass on.If you ring him leave a message and he will eventually get back to you and the same with emails. It takes time so be patient. After all he is retired. To run emission Dellortos on a Zed car Gordon makes new idle air (air bleeds ) correctors which make the carbs run better. The carbs with the suffix F,G,H,L and N after DHLA40 are the emission ones. If they have C or E they are universal performance non-emission models. If anyone is going to buy carbs individually BEWARE. Make sure the carbs have the same number stampings. Parts for Dellortos are no longer cheap these days. Gordon has quoted me . Emulsion Tubes $46 ea; idle jets $19 ea. If you have any questions get in touch with him on the following.

Gordon Dobie

I should have mine on the Dyno in the next couple of weeks.

Hope this Helps. David.
