So I have had a search through the forums and haven't been able to find a great deal of info on road legal cages.

I have got the car back in tassie and it is in the process of being torn down to go for sandblasting. While I am at work I thought I may as well get my modification application underway, so I have done so but now I have hit a brick wall regarding cages.

The nation code of vehicle modification states that you are only allowed to install a 4 point cage or a 4 that can be converted to a 6 point for race days (but you cant fully register it with this), I was looking at putting in a comprehensive cage including through the firewall to the struts.... so this is where my question comes in!

If I were to install a 6 point cage in two separate pieces with the horizontal bars near the bottom of the seat and above my head removable would it be possible to pass off the front bars as "chassis impovement/modification"?

This sounds about right, but as is always the case, you really should consult an engineer for your appropriate state.  Reason being, they are more up to date with what is and isnt allowed and can guide you on your design.  Even better is a cage builder who can do all of the above, but make sure it comes complied etc.

I have street registered rx4 with full cage has been inspected number of times as i let rego run out when im not using it never had inspector mention roll cage though did have cop once suggest needed padding over drivers head

Been running 4 point half cage in zed never had problem with this either during inspections or friendly cop contact (no i didnt do that officer)

Contact big al at perth (tas) he is good engineer if you want to clarify it totally

Cheers for the direction mick!

I have used Al to do inspections before but had no idea he was an engineer! Good thing is he is only 5 minutes up the road :D

I have a Cams Approved 8 point Roll Cage in my Zed. I think it is a bit of a grey area with regards to the intrusion bar accross the door area. My guys suggested that it should be legal if the bar is at the same height are the seat. Which mine is at it's lowest point of the cross X. I think that section is subjective. But I have been pulled over heaps of times by the cops and even had my car through the RTA for another issue and they never said anything. But if worst came to worst I would chop mine and make it removable. But so far so good. You need also to keep in mind most Targa Tassie road reg vehicles have full 6 or 8 point roll cages in them with cross's over their doors and are street legal.

good luck with it.

Howdy Spawn like Mick said Al is very good to deal with and worth a chat too, I'll also PM you a name and number of the guy at vehicle standards, you will most likely  have to fill in a 'Modification application form' and get them to tick it off before Al can sign it off. SI rego might also be worth a look at if your not planning on driving it every day? It's a lot cheaper at rego time and most of the cars running Targa, Rally Tas etc, who are from Tassie, run SI or rally reg. Scando is on Rally reg with his Zed, but you need a CAMs rally licence to get it.

Cool sounds like a plan. This will be the first car that I will actually be bothering to get engineered, the others I just dropped in the engine/diff/other stuff and drove them. Bad I know!

I already have the modification application form, filled in a great deal of it already. Not sure what the go is from there. I assume you send it to them or take it to the engineer?

I dont thinking SI rego is the go for me, I will be driving it anyday I can once I get it up and running. This will probably mean 4-5 days a week.

The name and number of the guy at vehicle standards could come in handy!

you have to send forms off the department of transport get approval in principle then go to engineer to see if he will approve it

With Si rego u only get 52 days a year on road i use it for rx4 and my 240z but no good if you need your car more than once a week

As long as an approved automotive engineer signs off on the cage, it will be legal.

sorry to say it but that isnt completely correct.

The goverment road transport body can overrule ANY engineer, even on jobs that have been previosly passed by both bodies.

Obviously they need to find that it is in breach of the rules first.

there was a spate of engineers work getting checked several years ago, mostly in NSW and QLD, the govt was cracking down on dodgy engineers passing jobs for cash.

every now and again it comes around.

We just had a 'mini' crack down here in the ACT, caused a few of my mates a headache or two.

Best advice, if you speak to anyone in the transport dept, get what they say in writing. pay them for their time if you have to.

Its called covering your ass ;)

I had a guy at work say pretty much the same thing, he had it happen to him with his RX3. The main thing I am trying to bypass is the A pillar bars, the national code states they are not allowed to be there as a part of a roll cage. I want mine to be a chassis/unibody modification that can be used in conjunction with the roll cage but not as it primary purpose.

It seems to depend who you talk to at the transport department but the guy I spoke to when I was getting mine engineered said they would happily do it with a full cage for full rego or race/rally SI rego.  Only thing they wouldn't let me do is get the 30year+ SI rego because it was too far modified but I've seen lots of other highly modified cars on it.

With your side intrusion bars, start them reasonably high at the back and angle them down at the front.  Gives the cage good rigidity and safety while making it easier to get in and out and it should pass the transport requirements.

With your front legs get them as close to the A pillar as possible.  The reason transport don't like the front legs is they obstruct your view.  When the engineer did my car he took photos from the drivers seat looking out to prove that the front legs in my car don't obstruct your view.

This one shows it fairly well, you can see what I was saying about the side intrusion bars.  My cage is nothing special.  It's just the most basic 6 point you can buy from Bond cages in Sydney.  But let me if you would like some more detailed pics and I'll try to remember to take some and send them to you  :)

I know this isn’t really related but I was wondering also on the topic of cages what would be the go around chassis edits.

and thankyou to all I have been looking around for information about cages.

Holy thread revival, Batman!
