Problems with 260z indicator switch/headlights

Hi everyone,

 

I have a 1976  2+2 that I've been slowly restoring for years. Almost ready for blueslip, just needs horn and indicator stalk working.

 

I bought a new switch which fixed both issues (i didn't even know the horn was connected to any of it), but regardless they both work now. The problem is that when I indicate (either left or right), the indicators don't turn on at all, but the headlights do. They dint flash, they simply come on whenever the switch is turned.

 

Also, the new switch advised it had hazard light cables that can be ignored, but was otherwise supposed to be same wiring (although some different coloured wires were a worry). If I put the original switch back in, the indicators again work. It's same wires, If I disconnect just the left/right indicator wires, everything works 100% (except for the indicators of course) ..

 

How can 1 switch work, the other turn on an unrelated system ... is there a short in the switch?

 

Any suggestions ?

Any thoughts?

What might be going on ?

I think we need pics of the new switch..are you sure its for a zed? With the original switches, there is no wiring for a hazard switch at the stalk. Hazard wiring is behind the heater control panel.

Sydney. Was from AllZparts in Hornsby.(Ages from my house .. specially without a registered car to get there).

 

Sheet that came with it says its for later model 240z which had a hazzard switch in there also.

 

I'll take pics tmrw in the sunshine.

Alright , i took it out , took some pics, noticed whilst doing so that one of the indicator wires wasn't 100% in its plug.. problem solved i thought.

 

put it all back in nicely.

headlights at least no longer come on when i indicate, although i think just removing it and replacing it fixed that. But now the hazard lights were blinking, and the hazard switch does nothing.

I decided to check the hazard switch connection behind the heater, and i found it wasn't connected at all. There was a dummy connector in its place with just one wire looped back keeping the circuit alive. I suspect someone else may have previously fitted the indicator switch with the hazard button on the indicator. I have one of these, so it must have been the original one in the car when i bought it years ago.. i have a total of 4 second hand indicator switches so it gets confusing.

 

Thankfully reconnecting this switch allowed me to shut the hazards off, but still the indicators don't work.

I noticed that if i disconnected the wires for the indicators it would break the circuit and stop them flashing, so i definitely have the wires connected now as they all should be.. well almost.

 

I noticed the black wire on the indicator switch has now come lose (unsolder-ed i guess) ... that's only thing I can see now causing me problems, once i fix that, I'll see how i go. Will see if i took any decent pics and post them shortly.

Yep there's a new type of spambot/spam person i've noticed lately.

 

They pick a topic, source some relevant (as far as they know) content from another website (in this case content came from http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/240ZTSignalMod/turnsgn1.htm ), post the comment so it seems relevant, then add a link spam on the end.

 

I first noticed it on OZDAT when a spammer posted something that made no sense at all in the context of Datsun 180B's. A google search of what they posted led me to a gun forum where the post they copied word for word was talking about a particular model of rifle called a 180B.

Yeah they are trying to increase inbound links to their website to help with their rankings on Google and other search engines. Link spam, and they are obviously getting more creative with their methods.
