MR260 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Hey guys, Ive had my zed for about 2years now and all ive done to it is put a new set of tyres and she has never let me down. Ive been on a couple of trips with you guys but have been too busy lately and got into motorbikes for a bit and my zed just sat in the garage. Anyway im off the bikes now just not worth the risk. So anyway ive gotten back into the zed again and have realised i need to do some work. Mechanically she is great. But!! I need to: Repair various rust all over not very major but time to stop ignoring it. Reskin door trims atleast Fit new seats or repad the originals repair heater as demister doesnt work, the previous owner bypassed original controls and has a series of vaccum lines connected to taps that doesnt work anymore. reaplace all door rubbers I want to: Lower the car with King Springs Fit strut brace to front fit new wheels 16x8s if they will fit fit new front and rear bumpers tint windows Problem is i dont know where to start and have considered selling the car and starting again but she been so good to me and i may just end up buying someone elses problem. I paid $3800.00 for the car and its fitted with an L28 and 280zx gearbox. anyway worried i may end up spending too much and dont really have knowledge for panel work. What do you guys think i should do? I will need heaps of advice once i start. Thanks Joel. Quote
xa1973 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Hello Mate Sounds youve got a good solid base car, sadly rust is the ( killer ) car and pocket wise, there is really no cheap fix although cheaper if you can do it yourself, but you say your not game... With the list of goodies you want to do and depending how bad the termites are you would be looking at a minimum of $10k to $15k plus to bring her back up to speed.. Quote
C.A.R. Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Where'd you pull the figure from, Jeff?! I've seen this car up close & there's not much wrong with it. Joel, long time no hear mate! All that stuff is pretty easy. I could help you out with the bodywork for a cheap, mate - & some of the other stuff too... There'd be no more than a few grand to bring it up to a good standard Quote
xa1973 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I always assume the worst condition of a car and imagine what could be lurking beneath and unseen I based that figure on possible ( usually but not always, major ) hidden rust repair and quality whole car strip down and respray plus minors, if its in very good nic all the better, less pain and more joy.......... I say $10 ---to--- $15k as an average for that type of combined panel / paint and mechanical work if paying a quality shop/s to do the work This will obviously vary up or down based on personal wants and needs, you can spend $15k just on a paint job if you want.... But as Lurch has had the benefit of seeing the car and can help out at Mates rates, your already in front........... Quote
MR260 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 Thanks guys, Im keen to have a go at all the work but have never used a spray gun before and i guess its only really the paint im worried about. When ive done rust repairs before on previous cars ive only ever used fibreglass and bog for holes. Im guessing this is not the best option but dont know. Ive got a couple of fairly good spare doors and a hatch that i got off Datzed last week for a great price. Dont think my doors and hatch are that bad though. Lurch and anyone else your advice and help would be greatly appreciated and i would be willing to pay ofcourse for any hands on work. My greatest concern is starting and never finishing so i dont really want to completely take the car off the road. Maybe prep a panel at a time. Mechanically i reckon my car is excellent. Anyway i should have around $5000.00 to throw at the car as soon as i sell my Vstar cruiser xvs650 if anyone interested. When the next Meeting/BBQ and we can have a closer look at my car and get me motivated. thanks Joel Quote

While I can't spray paint (I prefer to leave that to the pro's), I'm like to think I'm somewhat competent at metalwork. FG patching & bogging only creates more problems down the track, IMHO. I'd be better to have a look at your car up close & scrutinize it properly again Lurch and anyone else your advice and help would be greatly appreciated and i would be willing to pay ofcourse for any hands on work. My greatest concern is starting and never finishing so i dont really want to completely take the car off the road. Maybe prep a panel at a time. Are you wanting to have a full respray done? It's pretty easy to knock the rust repairs over quickly. If you feel like a drive down to Warragul mate, we could go over it with a fine tooth comb... Mechanically i reckon my car is excellent. Anyway i should have around $5000.00 to throw at the car as soon as i sell my Vstar cruiser xvs650 if anyone interested. MR260 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 Hey Lurch, Id be happy to cruise down so you can go over it with me. Dont want a full respray if i can avoid it but i dont have alot confidence in the last spray job and prep work. I might try and post some pics if i can work out how and see what you guys think. Might even finally lower the car like you been tell me to from the first time you saw my car Lurch. Quote
C.A.R. Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Nps mate My number was in the PM I sent you... Quote
MR260 Posted August 22, 2009 Author Posted August 22, 2009 Dropped my Zed off to Lurch today for some rust repairs, King Springs, new rubbers and what ever else my budget and wife will let me do!! After 2yrs or so of ownership and 15000 k's of absolute trouble free driving I have not spent a sent on my Zed So its about time I look after her the way she has for me. Only wish i had the time and knowledge to do it myself. Thanks very much for offering your services Lurch and look forward to seeing the progress.. Looks like Lurch has got a Lost and Found service going too!!! cheers Joel Quote
lightmaster240z Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 I know your going to be very happy when you get it back from the Z doctor. I konw i was. regrads Bruce Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Well I've finally gotton a chance to start on Joel's Bus & atm it's stripping & inspecting. I've taken the front PS guard off as the guard is a bit sad & also where the guards bolts onto in the engine bay 'flange'. More to come later... (Pics taken with my Nokia phone!) P.S. I'm COVERED in bog & rust dust Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Well in between the SPAmaster poping in for a chin-wag, a dizzy change & a quick tune, I managed to get a new panel formed & welded in on the PS guard. There was 3 previous repairs (ie 3 layers of sheet (badly) welded over the old rusted section) so I cut the lot out and started again... Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I also cut out a rusted section on top of the guard, formed up a patch & tacked it in. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Joel the repairs look great so far. I bet your missing your car by now regrads Bruce Quote
MR260 Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Nice work mate!!! If i had decided to do it myself i probably would have cracked the sads with all the rust and it would have sat in the garage for years until the Boss forced me to get rid of it!!! Really appreciating all your hard work mate Missing the car heaps amazing how the Zed can just sit in the garage for month without even looking at it but when its not here all i want to do is drive it. The good thing is ive started on the house exstensions so will have more room in the garage once i bring the Zed home. Cheers Joel Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Today I was busy working on the back of Joel's Bus... :-\ There were a lot of bog & rust holes in the 'slam panel' where the hatch locks into, & since you can get new panels easily I decided to unpick it & see what the panel(s) was like underneath - I'm glad I did! Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 And a couple of bodgy repairs a PO to Joel had performed on the rear 1/4's... I'll be tackling these after the rear slam panel is fix0rd... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 13, 2009 Moderators Posted September 13, 2009 Lurch, wait til you remove a roof skin and peek at whats underneath... About 90% of zeds have rust under there.. Quote
C.A.R. Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 No way in heck I'm doing that, Dimitri! Few more pics too: Quote
xa1973 Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Good work Lurch... What are you replacing the parent metal with.... Quote
