Hi Folks. My best friend died recently and his widow wishes to sell his beloved 1975 260Z 2-seater 3-spd auto and has asked me to help. He kept it in superb condition, and it was properly maintained. How should we go about the task of selling this car? I want to make sure a fair price is obtained. Should we start with a Red Book valuation? We live in the Melbourne Outer Eastern district.

A standard 2 seater in excellent condition (like winning shows condition) is worth up to mid 20K

A good solid car with no faults (nothing worth repairing) is worth 15K or so

A car with a few faults might be more like 10k

A car needing a restoration is possibly worth 5k

A car thats needing a lot of rust work and panel damage might be worth about 2K

It really depends how quick she needs to sell. If you have time put it up for sale with a high price and see what people are willing to offer. Otherwise wait until a few of the guys on the forum are getting together and take it to them for their opinion.

OK, the 260Z will be transferred to my garage within a few days, and I will arrange the sale from my home at The Basin. I will take some pics and pop them up for you to look at. I assume I will also have to arrange a roadworthy certificate (am I right?). :-\

Don't Be worried that Selling a car Unroadworthy will get you much less money For his wife, Most Zeds around are sold (Mostly to members here i'd say) Unregistered as they are a 30+ year old car and Prone to Rust/ware, Either way some pics thrown up on Here would be the best bet as there is always a new member looking for there first Zed, Or Someone looking to add to there Collection, Either way dude, the People here will give you a Fairly Accuarate indication of roughly how much the cars worth Pretty quickly.

- there are some Extreamly knowledgeable Members one here.

Take care mate - Mick

also make sure you include the month/year of build and the build no...is it matching No's ?

also close-up pics of rust prone areas..

within 3-4 days you should have at least a dozen expert valuations  ;D ;D

The easiest way to sell would be to post the details etc here...  :D Everyone's always looking for a Z in good condition.

I was always against auto´s until I had a ride in Scoot´s 260z. That thing kicks through the gears damn hard. Nearly enough to make me interested in one while I finish my project  :)

How about flicking them up for us all to have a look see....

;)

I now have the car, and I have taken pictures. I have been trying to understand the procedure required for creating a gallery and uploading my pictures into it, but I think I need a bit of help.

I will do a classified ad a bit later, but I will take this opportunity to mention a few things about the car.

It is a 1976 Model RS 30 AM (Coupe), Colour 301M (goldy brown). My late friend owned the car from April, 1985, and there was one previous owner. It has been very well maintained, is currently registered, and is displaying no evidence of rust. It has been fitted with new twin SU carbs and was tuned by The Carby Shop about a year ago. I drove it today for the first time, and its performance is nothing short of exhilarating! I could find no evidence of rust anywhere on the car.

Now, a little help with that gallery please.

Looks very original with that pin stripping.

Has anything been modified? If not market her as such.

I always like to see the engine bay.

Post more pics please.

Based on those pictures I wouldn't sell it under $8k. I'd have a reserve of at least $12k. That's my opinion anyway.

my car was in similar condition (only diff really being that it's a manual) and i had no issues getting an insured agreed value of 12k

take off the seat and steering wheel covers, and get new carpet (assuming it isn't the orginal carpet anyway) as if its all clean inside 15g or so probably aint to much to be asking (well i'd like to think so anyway) specially if its never been resprayed - although i'm guessing it has?

$13-14k...

Id normally go higher but, Im not a fan of brown on Tan + the auto gearbox,

looks very neat...

edit: haha I just posted the same moment as zedevan, almost identical valuation !

It cost me $1200 to get reupholstered seats and new carpets which totally transformed the interior of the car. It's something that people will notice immediately when they get inside and it will always get comments since people usually expect poor interiors on old cars. Not sure if you could get all $1200 back on the value, but it might make it much more appealing to a prospective buyer. It took the upholsterer 4 days.

Edit: Just read again your selling it for someone else so this probably isn't a good suggestion  :-[

Another thought, give the engine bay a good go over with a couple cans of degreaser, it will look really good.

will be interesting to see what it goes for..........

as is, it doesn't look like something that would fetch more than $10K.

Just put it on carsales mate..........don't waste your time with ebay.

The car is about to be checked for mechanical defects, so I will report on that in a day or two.

One thing has me a bit confused. I am new to Datsuns, yet I note that this car has a personalised number plate. To a Datsun person, what would be the significance of the number plate 10B262?

Its not a personalised numberplate, it's the original number plate the car was issued with (ie. its never been re-registered).  The old plates used to be black and white like that... Our old '77 Range rover that we were the second owners of, had the numberplate IYH 941 in the same style.  Which incidentally must have been nearly one of the last of that style plate, as a mates '81 Rangie had a white and green plate starting with BJB....  I presume when the white and green plates begun, they started from AAA 000, but I'm not sure.

The plates on your 260 are the original ones. The A's started in late 78-79. I remember alot of new VB Commodores starting with A. We had a VC with ATV699 in 1980-81. Another 260Z I know of which is a 77 model has IUP327 in black and white. Keep them in good condition; if you want Vicroads to re-issue them, it will cost $395! You are right Zedophile..
