As some of you may be aware i had some trouble with my engine on the way back from the Grampians.

I was cruizing along nicely but the engine was a little above half on the tempreature gauge, sulio and craig were catching up behind so i passed dale and gave the Zed a reasonable amount of throttle up to just over 5000 rpm in top gear. Apon entering the next town i noticed a irregular tapping sound coming from the engine and after Lurch and i removed the tappet cover, found (as suggested by lurch) that a lash pad had been thrown. We replaced it but after driving off the engine was popping through the exhaust.

At this stage we were about 70 clicks out from Ballarat so i kept going and as soon as i got home removed the spark plug of which the electrode had been bent closed, naturally this could only mean one thing. Something had come adrift.

You didn't muck around getting the engine out Scoota. I guess you are only doing what you planned to do in a few months time so I am glad it's all not too much of a drama for you. Have fun and of course make it bigger and better.

Now your car looks like mine. ;D I really wanted to go to the Grampians but didn't want to stuff other people around if something happened to me. Looks like you were lucky it didn't happen in the hills.

Work is rained out today so i've got the pistons out. As i suspected all the top rings were broken and on number 5 it tried to escape.

I'm rebuilding the motor with new flat tops, rings, bearings, timing chain, camshaft etc etc etc.

The pistons had broken rings when i first took them out and i should have replaced the pistons at that time. They're just worn but i only did a new set of rings to pass EPA test.

Plus as Dale says i'm not exactly light on the Accelerator.

Also the bores are probably a bit ovalish so it's off to the engine reconditioners to get an assessment and rebore to suit the L28 type flat top pistons. This may be what caused the rings to break but any other suggestions are welcome.

Ok so the engine is disassembled and in at the machine shop where it's going to get;

Acid cleaned/ dipped

A rebore to 30-40 thou

Resize rods

Balance crank, flexplate balance etc

The top of the block decked

Modification to the crankshaft (as well as a linish)

New pistons fitted

so why did that happen?

When the bores become worn, part of the flame can wash over the piston rings and cause them to break because of excessive heat.

Why didn't the head bloke remove the more of the casting around the valve guide?

Also, is he running it up on a flow bench?
