RBZ 260 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 just been given the oportunity to buy a 67 Ford Mustang RHD converted with original motor 3spd man also given the bigger 302 engine in perfect runing order. all bits apperently there. did see the car in person. not one spec of rust all been done. ost of the suspension parts all yellow zinc plated as well as nuts and bolts etc... the car is in pieces just needs assembly and possible respray as i dont like the colour or the finish. its been done 15years ago the old school way. so its acrylic paint. no dents car is in perfect shape. seats need slight attention but nothing to serious. price i got given for this is 5k. with two engines and lot of spares and lot of upgrades liek LSD diff and disc brakes all around. all the chrome bits badges etc are present. this things can fetch pretty penny once completed. i know its yank tank blah blah blah at the moment only looking at it as an investment. as the car is realy good shape. once completed i prob keep it for short time one summer than move it on as i am a JDM freak. though always wanted an american classic and muscle car. hmmm 290boss engine with couple of turbos would be nice the dilema is this. he will wait for me for few months till make room for another car. but having a new house to build will put on a bit of a strain on my workload and pocket. dont want to loose an oportunity to own and work ona iconic car like Mustang just because of wrong timing. xa1973 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Hello mate Is it a fast back or the secretary coupe Cheers Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 if it was fastback i wouldnt even think about it woould be mine no its the notchback. Quote
PZG302 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Buy it!!!!!!! If I had a spare 5K I would take it off your hands immediately, I've always liked the notched backs with the Aussie racing history, Leo Geoghan and Norm Beechy raced notch backs quite successfully in Improved Production. Don't talk myself into it, I have no room and the Charger is getting close to completion and needs the dollars......... Please don't talk myself into it, I have no room and the Charger is getting close to completion and needs the dollars......... :-\ :-\ Quote
sexual_sushi Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 +1 for buy it now. I love the look of the fastbacks but I also love the coupe(?) If it were me I would keep it (I've always wanted a Z, a mid 60's corvette and a mid 60's mustang) but if you want to make a buck it sounds like a cheap project. I've noticed most mustangs in decent complete order are around $18000-$25000 (not sure if they actually sell though) and showy ones go for a bit more. I know you can get few off ebay from the states for $15000 but such a hassle. I would research how much similar cars are going for and then work out dollar per dollar what you would need to get it done. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 lol well there is a small issue of money.im ok at the moment but in few months when the house starts well i guess most people that build or bought their houses will know. it gets tight. not to miss the oportunity i guess my bellowed 260z must go. also to keep the missus happy. not wanting to part with the s15 i just bought instead of the Z (s15 is my other unicorn after the S14) so may have to go back to my s14 till i get my 240z sorted out before i get back into the z again (thats is going to hurt a lot i love my z) so yeah not to miss that one only option i got is to sell the 260z :'( so expression of interest will be taken seriously this time. at the moment i preffer to sell as is but obviously $$$ will be lot higher. so some things could and will be swapped for standard to make it more affordable. ie rims, brakes, diff suspension etc... everything else will stay unless someone wants it even cheaper. RBZ 260 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 this does look hot and very mean. hey i still have another z so not goin anywhere. Quote
zzzzed Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 the 67 is my fav but meh! mustangs have been done to death in the yank tank world. It sounds like you have made up your mind, so if it is what you like then go for it Quote
xa1973 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 The notch back is the poor cousin, zillions were made and targeted mainly as cheap daily transport for Secretarys, Bank Tellers and the like.. Yes, they can look tough......if you spend a sqillion, but not keen, a mate of mine bought one cheap and then cost him a BOMB to bring up to speed, dodgy conversion rectified, birds nest wiring, Aus compliance issues etc etc... Whilst the price may be attractive, the oncosts will be huge... Just a thought Quote
sexual_sushi Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 it is really sad to sell a Z but if you have another one anyway why not get a different make. Since you are going to be selling a z to do this work out if you want keep the mustang for yourself or sell it for a profit. If you want to keep it and it's as good as you describe its probably worth it. I have been looking at mustangs (not in great depth though) over the last year and they hardly ever come up that cheap. They are either absoulte wrecks for $3000-$5000 or driving vehicles for $15000+. Now if you are doing it for a profit, and even more so if you are selling a z to do it, make sure you work out every little cost involved. Memebr 68GTCS owns a 68 GT/CS California Special Mustang. Maybe ask him his advice, he might be able to help you with hidden costs or the parts that are hard/expensive to source/replace etc. Do a very detailed budget cause I reckon 90% of peoples car budgets are out by $1000's Edit: find out how much they are selling for especially due to the GFC now. Also a lot of people list these cars at a price but that doesn't mean they are actually selling at the listed price. Anyway I have attached a mustang I saw on ebay a year ago, i think its quite hot... Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 yeah i know all that. im really sad or not willing to sell the z expecialy when i just spent over 550 for new clutch. had bit more to think. i think i still get it got two months to pay for it and bring it home. in mean time i should have cleared up some room. as for finishing the car off i dont think there is more than maybe 1k but lets say 2k to get it on the road. all the stuff has been restored or replaced with new one. we see prob still go ahead with it. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 2, 2009 Author Posted May 2, 2009 thats the car that caused all the fascination with mustangs with me. pitty fastbacks are out of my price range. but havin twin hairdriers and efi setup on the coupe should be just as fun some pics i took today of the Mustang. other than checking the paperwork i think its done deal. lots of pics lots of documentation so i guess i can go wrong with it. only thing im scared is spending more money i want on it ie twin turbo and efi setup. xa1973 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Hey Johnny A couple of good pics there, looks like all the rust has been cut out, ( whew!! ) like the Z they are notorius for hidden finds.. and more often than not the replacement panels are a swine to cut and shut particularly if the body has a crab in it Appears to be a good solid base for you for work on, plenty of good gear is available in after market parts etc, Eagle Spares on Gippsland Hwy Victoria carry the majority if not all of what youll be after, Rob @ Ringwood Auto parts also carrys a lot of the generic Ford mechanicals at very good prices and he'll source for you as well... top bloke Ive used him for years Im keen to see how you go, yes they can be a very BIG money pit, but you gotta pay to play, if you need any info drop me line... Why not drop a standard second handy 302 windsor EFI in it for the moment they are a good block with solid bottom ends and torque, quite a few come up for sale on Doomsday Bay at reasonable prices, log a notification post or you can buy a crate motor already souped Cheers Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 cheers XA ive went through his album when he started pulling the car apart. even than it looked reasonable. has got most steps included. it has been acid diped than rear 1/4 panel replaced and than whole thing diped in etch primer. the panels boot , bonnet, doors have been all zinc plated. prob not the best idea as it does show some poor plating on one of the guards and door. Mind you this car as per pics i uploaded its been sitting like that since 1993. so shes been sitting for 15+ years im sure if rust it would have shown by now. but none that i can see. thanks for the info about parts etc....it will come in very handy. ive been thinking over the weekend about this car. as most know ive collected quite a few cars now and will need to do some clearing fairly soon.most probably the mazda rx4 will have to go fairly soon when it gets refreshed. missus only lets me keep 3 cars. hope i can squieze another one initialy i wanted to put it togetehr and sell it for a bit of profit. but these deals dont come often. so like u sugested get a efi V8 out of EF EL XR8 or LTD/fairline. dirt cheap at the auctions. preffer manual 5spd than give it a light reco get the compresion ready for a couple of T28 turbo's and im sure she pump out some nice numbers. than slot that in give it the 2 stripes accros the car and a lower lip some nice yank chromies and she look like Elanor. though 290boss would be sweet with 6spd and a supercharger. but thats big money. What u think of the colour? apperently its of a 93 xr falcon. didnt like it but i cant be stuffed stripping the whole car again to change to a gunmetal gray. when i saw it for second time it kinda looks ok. just needs a good polish or maybe a refresh with 2pk. hmmmm hope missus dont see this she rip my head off Quote
xa1973 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Hey Mate I hear you I had to have a bit of a Clearance sale with a couple of my loved ones and parts prior to coming back to QLD from WA, the transport costs would have been cruel Im lucky Ive got a GOOD sized shed and the wife rarely wanders down........... Happy to hear the ( ex owner ) has done the righty with the resto so far, I think youve got a winner, I like the darker colour youve got, give it a cut and polish first up before installing anything have a look at it then decide if you want a change or go two tone, very effective on that style of body Drop her to coke can ride height, 15 x 7 up front 15 x 10 on the rear, 2.5 or 2 7/8 inch extractors ( not headers for ground clearance ) into a cross over then 2 inch straight through, the 302 has a very crisp roar under load.... Edit: If you drop her low you will have to shim for camber and castor if using OEM front end, or buy IRS after market front end, also comes with PS if you want....= $$$$$$$$ Cheaper version in power steering, an xd or f box will fit nicely and will take the sumo wrestler effort out of spinning her around when parking On one of my utes ( 351 Clevo 4 bolt, 4 valve, 750 DP) I ran my exhaust to just before the rear wheels both sides, slipped on a 90*.. ..mean , my dog trys to maul the tips when I fire her up, LOL Buy a " Painless " wiring harness also, they come in various configurations are bullet proof and easy to install for your electricals..... Anyway Mate keep the posts coming..... I love this stuff Cheers Jeff Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 im currently browing the net finding more info on these things. so fa i know its made in California 7 april in 67 has a 289 2V. also its definetly hardtop from factory LOL as if someone will chagne the fastback to hardtop but hey u never know mods on it so far hes done something to the front suspension for better handling extra holes etc... also i think he has xf steering box since its converted and also xf hubs and vented disk brakes replacing the drums. now from pics i cant tell if power steering but if not i definetly want it. wiring not fussed thats my bread and butter so i can almost do that blindfolded. prob upgrade the brakes even further to something bigger and better possibly AU or BF rotors and calipers and do rear disk conversion as well. also i think its been droped as ive noticed lowering blocks and the rear leaf springs have been positioned on the highest position= car lower. so as for the shimming and stuff as far as i know the front end is not stock. so its eaitehr done or not required but ill check with him anyway for as many details as possible. here some more pics Quote
xa1973 Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Sounds good..... So its half way there already and all for 5k Im impressed....this is a gooood one... Im not a fan of lowering blocks, I usually get custom sets of rear springs made to my ride specs by King Springs in QLD, I think from memory around $400 ( plus freight minimal $$) You can nominate the load ride height and amount of stiffness ( leaves you want in them ) Youll find when you push her hard the rear end will not behave or feel right as they tend to wander a bit and the blocks only make it worse and the suspension will not behave as it should, get a good sway bar also for the rear end For your front and rear end brake set up check your proportioning valve so it corresponds with your front brakes and MC or perhaps use the complete system from one donor car, if using from a later year car this will also lead to adaptabilty on your spindles, hubs, rear axles, diff etc.. Cheers Quote
Enzo Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 i think its been droped as ive noticed lowering blocks and the rear leaf springs have been positioned on the highest position= car lower. Hi Mate, Can't see lowering blocks in your last picture but the lift kit fitted to the end of the rear springs will lift the car. These are attatched to the original anchor points for the springs to raise the car. Only good if you want to fit fat tyres or give the car a raked look. It raises the centre of gravity as well. Not good for high speed. All in all, it looks like a nice project. David. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 nah the lowering blocks were in the box. sorry should have been more clear. so the leaf spring being positioned to the highest anchor point rises the car?? bit new to the leaf spring arrangment but to me if u place it closer to the anchor point should lower it unless im missing a point how these things work. i wont have it sitting high. like XA said coke can height. or whatever legal point i can get away with as the car will have to go through rego department for the RH converson and to be registered in OZ. still California plates on it. aftre that she be scraping the ground Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 o i get it now. if u put it on the lowest point than the whole thing will expand hence lower it down. while closer to anchor point rises the car. or em i FULL of $hit. man coil overs are so much better Quote
xa1973 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Ive had a look at your rear hanger set up, it looks like what they use on Broncos and the like as a lift kit, not really for a road car and doubtfull rego will like it Ive taken some measurements and pics off my ute as the set up is identical, rear hanger with hole centers at 90 mm and 7 leaf springs lowered 4.5 inches at the rear and HD coils and stubbie sports shocks lowered 4 inches at the front from stock Tyres are 245/60/r14 on the rear and 235/60/r14 on the front The disc brakes from a ZJ fairlane will swap right up to your car, dont forget to grab the hand brake set up as well, the only anomilie will be the MC as its largish in size and will foul on the front strut tower, but you can get an after market jobbie to suit.... Quote
towndrunkensmurf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 hmmmm '67 coupe with 4.0L of turbocharged aussie 6.... one of my next projects after the 26 oz is done... i dont know why but i like the coupes better then the fastbacks.... buty im just strange Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 LOL was thinking about that be bloody quick car but................ ........only reason for wanting a yank muscle car is cause of the V8. but 5.4L Boss with twin turbos will be nice too even 5L with twins should be enough in a 1300kg car. still trying to get the ins and outs about registering the car. know lot more about them and besides having agricultural suspension and steering is fairly impressive car. got few version of the colour scheme so the colour most probably will change. more money Quote
