hey guys

my mate just bought a 240z and would like to know how to change the speedo from miles to kms per hour

how hard is this to do or must just swap the speedo over??

or is there more involved than that.

I have not done this, but it might be as easy as changing the face on the gauge. You may not even have to take the gauge itself apart! Can anyone confirm this?

If you have to swap the gauge out its not hard either, just ebay another speedo and it should plug right in.

Steve, can you explain further on this twin loop and single loop?

I have both in front of me and there is a very tiny difference between what i believe to be a 240z MP/H speedo and a 260z KM/H speedo.

They both use the same speedo line, fits perfectly.

i have yet to test it as my car isn't back yet. I have a feeling it will work in my case because i have a square wire inside my speedo cable and this would fit the 260z KM/H speedo that i bought.

I also have a JDM S30 speedo which looks like a hybrid between the 240z and the 260z in terms of plug input and lighting input design. However it has a 260z speedo input. But yea I'll mix and match and see how it goes next week, when i get the car back.

I did the swap a couple months ago...

I swaped the entire inards of the kmh speedo into the mph casing. I did this because the kmh casing does not bolt up to the exising plate...well , not without some awkward modifying anyway.

I used the existing 240z speedo cable and it worked for about 30 seconds, then it stopped..I think the cable snapped. I havent has a chance to get back to sort it out.

Its a pity the front clear plastic lens cant be removed from the "outside" ...otherwise I'd have put a sticker over the existing Mph/hr.

Fiddly job , unless your short & have small hands, then its not so bad . :-X

I'm about to do the same thing, but the 240Z mph speedo have some kind of relay (US spec) on the back side, i think it have to do with some emission stuff, who cares, i pulled it all off, i just don't want to skip the relay if it have to be in use for some reason.

The km/h speedo i have is from a JDM Fairlady and the housing must be the 260Z kind, so i also have to swap the guts in to the 240Z one, now on the 240Z is one wire coming out from the face disc, but there is two wires coming out from the Fairlady speedo, what is the other wire for ?, i really can't see what it is there for, it just disappears in to the middle of the gauge.

Please help me out here mates.

Hey Chris,

Did this swap turn out ok? did you have to do anything else to get the speedo working and displaying the correct speed?

Thanks,

Will.

Hey guys, I did the same thing with my blue zed and you do have to put the 260 inners inside the 240 housing as mentioned above, and bobs your uncle.

Hey Will,

Unfortunately I gave up trying to replace my speedo cable, i replaced the first one with a spare which for some reason seemed to be 10mm too short and then reinstalled the original which is buggered. The speedo works eratically but as mentioned would work perfectly with a new cable. I tried to contact All z parts a while ago to buy a new one but I dont believe there still trading.

Mehhh just get a thin permanent marker and put some marks on for 40km 60km and 140km/hr  ;D

I see it hasn't been mentioned yet, but my car actually has a sticker on it!!!

No joke, someone has just stuck a kph sticker over the mph numbers. It sounds silly but I've actually seen it a lot and it sounds a lot simpler than some of the other options here. Works fine except the trip counter obviously still reads miles.

In my 240Z, I used the face from a late 280Z (Would be late 260 to you guys), '77 or so, that had the MPH around the dial like normal, but then had Km/hr inside the MPH, in blue. This way I had the best of both worlds.

Another option would be to speed up the speedo cable drive speed, I believe it's by .68% to have the MPH speed read as Km/hr. I know for many older GM vehicles these adapters are readily available that thread on to the trans, between the trans and the speedo cable. The Datsun/Nissan drive tang is different though.
