rosco Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Hi guys. How can i find out what gearbox i have in my car. Is there a stamp or somthing on the housing itself? I need to change few bearings in it due to excessive noise and i need to find out what exactly the gearbox is. Thanks for your help. Rosco 1971 240z Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 6, 2008 Moderators Posted June 6, 2008 Easiest way I can tell if you have a 260 or 280ZX gearbox is by the filler plug. If its on the drivers side its a 260 box (most sought after!) and if its on the left, same side as the exhaust passes the gearbox, its a 280ZX gearbox. Quote
aegean Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 But he seems to have a 240 ........ "Rosco 1971 240z" Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 7, 2008 Moderators Posted June 7, 2008 I dont think there are many 240's running around with the original, extra long "flange" type gearboxes. If he has a look and it is one of them, there you go! Majority of zeds have had them replaced because parts for the original 240 boxes are nearly impossible to find unless you know of a huge stockpile somewhere. I just assumed it has been replaced at one time or another... Quote

Why is the 260 5spd most sought after? eg, Is it strength or good ratios? Is there anything negative about the 280ZX box? Need to know coz will be converting the auto to 5spd soon. Quote
dazzed Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 does your car have a split tail shaft , spline slip type, if so its the origonal box, thats not a bad thing nothing wrong with 240z flange type boxes, all it means is that the rear suspension axles and crossmembers are fitted in the wrong position, compliments of nissan, and to rectify that it means modifying the tailshaft, so people just opt for the later box and tailshaft Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 8, 2008 Moderators Posted June 8, 2008 From what I believe, the 260 gearbox is preferred because of the long 1st gear ratio (2.9?) whereas the 280ZX 1st is 3.2. Its as close as you can get to the option 1 box close ratio 1.9 1st. I have a list somewhere of all the different ratio's.... If you can't find one don't stress....its no big deal. Quote
zedevan Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 my 260z 2 seater gearbox is available for sale if anyone offers me the right amount to inspire me to remove it Quote
Dingo Dave Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Anyone know how the box out of the bluebirds holds up. i know it bolts up. i just tried it. a mate here in canberra who works for nissan and has a 240 a 260, 2 fairladys and a few others said they are fine. anyone else Quote

Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 14, 2008 Moderators Posted July 14, 2008 I think so but make sure the clutch housing has the same height as your original. If its different, you may have to play with different length thrust bearing carriers. Most of the time its no big deal; they all fit together. Quote
2+2er Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Hi guys, Can you use a tailshaft from a 280zx (series I or II) in a 260 2+2 with the later non flanged 5 speed? I can seam to find any info on types of tail shafts. Thanks!! Quote
