I have a mate who is planning on removing the A/C from his 280zx, does anyone know, Will it fit into a 260z coupe?

seeing as the cars are very similar?

Or is it a case of dont even bother, just get a 240/260 system?

I'll be using a different compressor anyway, and probably have to change a few things to make the system R134 compliant.

The 280zx is a lot wider and more depth I think under the dashboard?

it may fit but with some techno modifications IMO??

Hi there,

I took the AC out of my z, but now want to put it back but was under the impression that the old compressor and ancillaries could not cope with the new refrigerant.  Is it difficult to upgrade the old AC in a 260?

upgrading to new 134 refrigirant usualy consist of replacing the drier reciever module with new one. replacing all the o rings and filters..

but being a real old system they don have O rings but a taper screw connection.so realy all you should need to do is to replace the reciever/drier bottle maybe new lubricant and fill it with new gas. it wont be as efficient as with old gas but it will be sufficient. the major difference lies in the condensor design. new condensors have lot smaller cores and more dense.

as for fitting the 280zx to 260z may be lot more difficult than just getting the stock 260z one.

i havent seen a 280zx system but assuming there could be lot of similarities between them. one way to find out compare the two and than you will know.

im a A/C tech i can look after you as one zed owner to another as long as it all fits in the coupe ... but before you fit it !! need to flush and test! was it holding gas when it was removed? let me know if you want a hand

mayhem, thanks heaps for the offer, but Vic is just a tad too far away from me ;)

i guess its sounding like im going to be better off getting the 240/260 setup to start with, at least the under dash stuff.

Im sure i could make other things fit in the front, there is after all a lot of room, and im doing a custom rad.

for the pump and the lines, i can get stuff made to suit, and adapt just about any pump.

thanks heaps everyone.

nism0zed, is your 260 got the mechanical levers that operate all the vents and heater cock etc or is it vaccuum assisted?

I am pretty sure there was a change in the 260's some have mechanical and some later ones had vaccuum assmeblies, those that came with factory aircond all had vaccuum actuators, i have a complete factory evaporator for the 260 that is designed to go with the vacuum assemblies that has been pressure tested and ready to go, doesnt really suit me as i still have mechanical levers and the two arent really compatible.
