aircobra Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 as per the "chuggin" thread, it sounds like some the main bearing is gone. so the tranny its coming out i never removed a box by itself before, but i do know from bolting it up to the block that its a pretty heavy piece of machinery this guy has a good write up http://www.biopatent.com/tranny.html now, all have a is a cheapo supercheap trolley jack http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/SCA-Hydraulic-Trolley-Jack-1400kg/215072 and the last tranny i did was off a Fiat 126. Balancing a tranny on a jack is not my idea of fun at all so i figure the choice are 1. get this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/112496337234and spend the $200. will probably never ever use it again 2. get this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Transmission-Jack-Adapter-Trolley-Jack-Gearbox-Adaptor-suits-most-garage-jacks-/232158346013?hash=item360db73b1d:g:ax0AAOSwxk9ZlnWY but even though the write up says "suit any jack", not sure it would fit Question ONE is: has anyone tried the adapter Question TWO is: does anyone have a loaner on Melb metro? nizm0zed Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 the gearbox has got some weight to it, sure, but can still be manhandled fairly easily. (depends on your strenght and fitness of course, dont bust yourself over it)Its not too bad in the zed, down and backwards and it'll slip right off.You could do it with a trolley jack pretty easy, just get a helper to stabilise the box while you lower and pull backwards, have the trolley jack running down the lenght of the chassis so it'll roll nicely.I dont think the adaptor will fit your jack, its designed for the bigger style 3 tonne jack. aircobra Posted August 20, 2017 Author Posted August 20, 2017 don;t have any helpers. more worried about getting it back on Quote
aircobra Posted August 20, 2017 Author Posted August 20, 2017 so my rebuild choices so far are Lurch or Lou Mondello? Quote

Drain the oil and pull the tail shaft to make it easier and to avoid having your balls doused in gear oil. Its much easier to manhandle than frig around with jacks etc. especially if the clutch isn't coming off as it should just fall back in..... Quote
aircobra Posted August 20, 2017 Author Posted August 20, 2017 yep, got all that planned, last time a stuck a rubber glove over the opening and that worked ended up ordering this - i like how its nice and low http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSMISSION-GEARBOX-TROLLEY-JACK-0-5TON-500KG-ADAPTOR-TRUCK-BRAND-NEW/112496337234?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2750.l2649 Quote
Andrew_L26 Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I've taken out a few manual gearboxes including the one out of my 260z, what I do is get it all unbolted then lie on my back and use my hands and knees to lower it onto my chest then roll it onto the ground. Probably only weighs around 20-30kg Auto gearboxes are a different story though! they would be closer to 50-70kg Andrew CBR Jeff 1 Quote
aircobra Posted August 20, 2017 Author Posted August 20, 2017 jeezzus, i don't mind spending the $200. bigger hassle is getting the suspension bolts torqued. see the suspension forum Quote
Retro Z Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 I use those small jacks all the time to remove and install gearbox. Just use a block of wood for more support or throw a rachet strap over the box. Or do it like how Andrew does it. L series box isnt that heavy Quote
aircobra Posted August 22, 2017 Author Posted August 22, 2017 .. so far 1. lurch has come up with a great offer 2. stewart wilkins can get me a full rebuilt kit for $140 ( bearings + seals) 3. bloke in north melbourne can do a fixed price re-race for $800 + sychros, if required .. just waiting for the jack to arrive i have cranked up the car stands to the top notch, apparently you need 45 cm to clear the box Quote
aircobra Posted August 23, 2017 Author Posted August 23, 2017 got it out last nite after the jack arrived. wasnt that hard, the biggest issue was jacking up the car high enough, you need 50 cm clearance just had a horrible thought -maybe its not the gearbox at all, could it be that i mismatched the clutch and the release bearing and that's where the noise is coming from? If it goes away when the clutch is depressed then it will not be the release bearing, if it starts when you push your foot on the clutch then it is the release bearing Quote
aircobra Posted September 10, 2017 Author Posted September 10, 2017 mystery solved the bloke too apart the box , replaced all bearings and when i got it back the reason for the noise was obvious. two of the large old bearings which he gave me in a plastic bag were rattling like crazy when spun. everything else was gold - synch OdinZ 1 Quote
