peter t Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Hi does anyone know the options for a 4 or 5 speed auto box that will bolt up to a L26 engine and fit into a 260z without too much TROUBLE? Quote

Cozza Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Yep Nissan skyline as well as some other manufacturers of the era used the Jatco L4n71b which is a 4 speed + lock up torque converter. Also available as an electronic version E4n71b I've been out of autos for too long to remember but, I wouldn't be surprised if you could transfer the bellhousing from a Nissan L4n71b box onto a later 5 speed Jatco JR5xxx box. ? 260DET Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 The 3 speed + overdrive out of my Z31 is apparently a good type of box, they can be modded to take 450hp but that's not a cheap exercise. Best thing is that they are comparatively light so one would have used one behind the Z31's V8 if I was confident it could hold it's power. If you are going to use one Peter check for shift improvement mods, an Aussie on HybridZ used to sell one mod kit. Quote

I've been researching similar options for a while and keep hitting up against the fact that any electronically controlled gearbox I would need to get a customised TCU to make it work in a Z Quote
260DET Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 (edited) Electronic or not it could be manualised if you want to shift it yourself. But if you want full auto then I'm pretty sure that the 3 +1 Z31 box is electronic and, as you say, would need it's own TCU. Which is not a bad idea, they are not that expensive. Best to check with someone like KEAS or their Melbourne agent though. Edited August 16, 2017 by 260DET Quote
