mrp69 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 hey guys just curious if i can do this and not engineer the car?? also how difficult would it be to adapt the stock gearbox to the motor?? and costing?? would the gearbox hold the power?? also were could i find a wiring harness for the car?? sorry if its the wrong section peter Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Yes it's in the wrong section It's not 'that' hard to find the right section to post in... I've moved it for you anyway. If you want the car to be legal, then yes you have to engineer it. As for the gearbox, go find a R32 GTS-t or R31 skyline box (71C box) These will bolt straight up. The L-series box has a different bell-housing bolt patten & it won't bolt up. Why do you want to bother with a N/A RB25 though? A mildly tweaked L28 will be much faster. Quote
mrp69 Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 can grab the motor off a mate for nothing also a newer motor and fuel injected but was just a consideration how hard would it be to find a wiring harness for it and whats a r31 box or r32 box worth?? Quote
zedevan Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 if you read what vicroads says about engine conversions its pretty ambiguous (says something about using a newer version of a similar motor is alright). although any increase in power by 15% is surposed to get an engineers cert, and i doubt most ppl do when they modify their silvias etc, and ppl putting 4age's in their sprinters seems to come under a similar categry. an rb25 gearbox is around 1.5g, rb20's are around 500 last time i saw Quote
JP240z Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Yeah you can pick up an rb25 gearbox for well under a grand. Quote
Scando Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 RB25DE box is the same as the RB20 box and they go for around $500. RB25DET box is huge and this is the expensive one. The smaller box would do the job fine though. Quote
DoctorZ Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I know I'm re-visiting some old posts here but I've been wondering, for those of you who have done engine conversions to RB series, was it worth the money and effort? I have been thining about an RB20DET conversion and I'm aware there's a lot more to the conversion than just a motor. I do love my l28 though so I think I would only consider it if the old girl breaks! Quote
George Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 personally i don't see the point of going RB unless you're going all out. if you want mild stick to L. it belongs in there. Quote
DoctorZ Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Yeah George you're probably right. Maybe just a different CAM and header/exhaust combo will do the trick. I still don't think the RB sounds as wild as an L series anyway. Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Fit a RB20det & I'll trouce you with my mild L28 RB20's arnt worth it. An RB25det on the other hand... Quote
DoctorZ Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Thanks Lurch! Perhaps I'll try the Mild L28 path to start with, I don't even know if the engine I have is stock or not. Need to do a compression test and check my CAM out. Quote
luvemfast Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 RB20's arnt worth it. Not true Lurch. My buddy used to have a HR31 Skyline with an RB20DET. A few mods and it was very fast. Made other friends cars feel slow, SLR5000 and VZ SS (6L) For club sprints it would be in the under 3.5L class (2.0L x 1.7 = 3.4L), could be very competitive. Quote
DoctorZ Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 As with any turbo motor, depends how much money you throw at it. Hence the reason I'm asking if it's worth it for a standard RB20DET, computer etc. I know it's possible to pick up one of these motors fairly cheap on occasion, but It's the engineering and RTA passing cost I'm worried about. Yes I would stay legal/ Quote
620Z Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I think the question that really needs to be asked here is how serious are you and how much money are you willing to spend. Work that out and what you want to use the car for, only then will you make the correct decision. Quote
DoctorZ Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 In that case the question is answered. The L28 will stay for now. But a nice new exhaust will need to accompany her. Quote
