Ok, so here are some pics

I emptied the car out totally over the weekend, and was disappointed at the amount of rust, so it will be probably going for sale very soon, i cannot afford to stop the rust where it is now, and love the car far to much to hold onto it and let it get worse.

Both floorpans are totally gone, as is the passenger side firewall.  The boot looks ok, and there is a little rust on the hatch panel but the hatch itself looks ok.  The doors are not aweful, and may not need a full reskin.

Better it go to someone else that can fix it.

Any suggestions on price?

and what made it worse, while I was emptying the car and looking at it, thinking this i to far gone for me to look at my 3 year old came outside and asked "What are you doing to my car daddy?"  Nearly broke my heart, it was going to be a project for the two of us to work on.

From what I can see, you'll need to sandblast the whole thing, whip off the rear 1/4 panels and maybe unstitch the roof also. Floor pans are toast, battery box is gone and front of the car looks like radiator support panel is not stock and evidence of a front-end hit.

It's a 71 model correct? With the early hand throttle arrangement?

In it's current state someone might wave $8k under your nose?

Nothing that can't be fixed, but it will require a whole lotta love, I don't think leaving it outdoors has killed it. It didn't help but it wasn't perfect to begin with don't kid yourself.

This is a long term project, maybe something you sink $10k each year into over the next 5-6 years...

I don't know your full circumstance so hard to say if you should stick with it, but someone once told me anything worth doing is never easy.

Do you know the chassis number? Since it's a 71 it would be good to add it to my records.

First post has it as a 72 Gav!

As Gav has said it needs lots of work. I can ony imagine what the bottom of the A pillar and dog leg will look like. Some one has been at it before you or you have tried to sort a few things previously.

My car was in much better condition than your car when I started and its taking quite a bit of time and money (but lots of fun and satisfaction) to get it sorted.

If you have the skills, time, equipment, commitment and dollars then nothing is impossible.

Not sure about the chassis number, will check tonight.

Not sure about front end damage, the rad support is just bent up, it's very rusted so moves quite easily, caught the little feller playing with it while i was taking the photos.

From what i can tell i have most if not all of the trim, and most of it is reasonable, i have most/all of the carpet, but it is all rubbish, but keeping it for templates if needed.

the dash is there, and the heater /fan could not see the original radio unfortunately.

not sure if all the gauges are there and complete, i remember seeing a shoe box with the speedo in it when i first got the car, but the needles where not attached so could even speculate as to what has been going on there...

while i would LOVE to keep it and spend the money on it, unfortunately it's the initial outlay of dollars to clean up the rust i just cannot get together.

So i think i will be making post in the sale section soon.

It does, that is what the rego sticker says, but from reading other post today did the 72's have the tool boxes in the boot?

maybe a 71 first registered in 72?

There is a serial number on the rego sticker, which is 5530975 but guessing that doesn't help? i'll check the firewall tonight when i get home.  Only 30 mins till home time.  (i love working in schools!)

That's probably the engine number I'm going to guess. L24-5530975 but it's only a guess.

It does, but it has the early hand throttle bracket. Which stopped around HS30 015XX range...

The front upper rail / cowl air vent induction area is crumpled. If you compare this side.

IMG_1519_zpsv3xqtlnl.jpg

with the other side, you can quite clearly see 1 side is quite damaged.

But the upper radiator support area, looks nothing like the factory upper support does..

All the trim pieces, gauges etc.. are actually quite cheap in the grand scheme of things. With a few exceptions mentioned earlier in this thread.

All the value in these cars is in the bodywork.

Thanks Tony,

I just replied to your PM, but since you posted the chassis number here:

It looks like it's a late 71.

Have a look here.

http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/13773-early-girl-bingo-with-photos/

Interestingly your car is sister cars with HS30 01428 which still exists.

https://picasaweb.google.com/107400787026175995661/HS3001428?authkey=Gv1sRgCMzorJ-g3cbjuAE&feat=directlink

It was compliance dated 10/70 - so likely your car was built a couple of month earlier than that.

So your car may have been 918 Orange originally also? Does it look like that was it's original factory colour?

The engine number in the sister car is L24-055813.

I'm guessing your's might be: L24-055309 ?

Pretty cool to find a sister car.

I should know better than to trust rego stickers, I imported a 89 model 300zx which Vic roads registered as 88, and no end of arguing and showing them the original application, import papers, recipes from Japan could fix, I sold it about 10 years ago but have since bought it back again from a guy in NSW and NSW rego sticker says it's a 96. But apparently when it was registered in the ACT it was registered as a 90 model...

I'd say it's more likely to be 110 red Gav. I bought a liter of 918 orange (tan) and it is a lot more orange than that.

I was working under the assumption it was repainted that colour red, but originally 918 orange. Since it's sister car HS30 01428 appears to have been 918 originally if you look at the photos of the compliance plate you can see under the blue there is an orange colour.

Take a look at the colour of the floor pans - what's left of them. And firewall...

Although it's odd the spare tyre well is red...

Have seen far less rusty cars come back from restoration/repair shops, with bills of $25-30k,

As bare shells, stripped, on dollies, finshed in topcoat.

Yours would have to be well North of that figure.

i know, which is why the cars is up for sale, i do not have that kind of money currently. in another 5-10 years i should be able to put that amount in. but unfortunately by that time, this car would most likely be beyond repair.

It makes me feel sick to sell it as i am genuinely scared that in 5-10 years time that what is currently worth $60K will be well above $100K

I do not beleive this car was a rally or race car.  i bought it about 10 years ago, and it has sat in a carport under a cover and then a garage since.  It was his father's car who i believe had it from new.

I understand your concern with a $40k price hike over the next decade. I reckon that is quite likely considering the recent rise in toy cars.

Have you got spare room in a dry shed and a couple grand burning a hole in your pocket?

If so, you could strip and blast / deep the shell, treat it with rust converter and sealer then pop it in a rotisserie and leave the project till you had some more coin and time.

This would help you to understand the full extent of the required repairs as well as any prospective buyers should the extent of work scare you off.

Just a thought.
