Roberto Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Hi Guys, It's well documented that S30 headlights are dim due to resistance from the cars fuse box and factory wiring and that using a relay to get power directly from the battery makes a big difference. Could this be done with the power wire going the ignition coil and would this be a way of getting a greater ignition spark? Just a thought...... Cheers, Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted September 21, 2015 Moderators Posted September 21, 2015 Hi. In short No. The coil in an S30 doesn't run on 12V except during engine start up. Cheers PB Quote
Roberto Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 Thanks PB. What about when you remove the ballast resistor, say when you are running a 280ZX dizzy and coil? Quote
Six_Shooter Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 If you're running an ignition system that doesn't use a ballast resistor, then yes, there is a potential for increased spark potential by sourcing a stronger ignition source for the ignition system. Quote
RLY240 Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Roberto the average coil only draws 4-5 amps so shouldn't have any trouble drawing this through the stock harness. A high output coil might draw 6-7 amps but you can always test this with your multi meter (most have a current limit of 10 amps which should suffice). Check the current (with the engine running) as is and then check it with a power feed straight from the battery. If the direct battery connection draws more current then you might get some gain with a relay (or just a heavier cable) otherwise you're just adding complexity for no gain.Roger Quote
