twoforty z Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Hi all, I have a 1971 240z that im trying to clear a defect on. It currently has a roll bar that im going to remove prior to its inspection, problem is my seat belt "loop" is mounted to it and im struggling to work out of any part of my seat belts are standard. It has the inertia reel mounted behind the seats but they look low and if i mount the loop back in its original position above the window it looks like they will rub. Also not sure what bolt size to use to mount them back in their original position above the window. Its one of the last things i need to fix to get this old girl back on the road so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Quote
PeterAllen Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Could be corrected on this but I thought inertia reels were fitted later and that a '71 240Z would have fixed belts? I'm about to order a set myself. New belts are available from Hemco and they have a SA agent. http://www.hemco.com.au/index.php/79-divisions/seat-belt Bolts are 7/16" UNF. Quote
gilltech Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 I really don't think an inertia seat belt system would have been 'standard' on a Zed of that vintage, AFAIK. I think they came along mid-260s era. eg. my '74 still has a lap belt with clip-on/detachable shoulder belt, with metal buckle (with Z logo) that sits against the hip, no stalk. Sounds like your car has been retrofitted with an inertia style, but whether done prior to later fitting the roll bar, or done along with the roll bar at the same time, do you know? And an extra bolt fitting added to the sill towards the rear to take the housing. And IIRC the 3 x original seatbelt bolts (2 x floor & 1 x roof) are all the same, high tensile fine thread. Best check with whoever is going to sign off on your car what sort of seatbelt they will accept, the original fixed style or an inertia style. Quote
PeterH Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Hi Peter are the belts you are ordering inertia reel belts? Cheers Pete Quote
PeterAllen Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 No. I want to discourage others from driving the car! While you can measure the angle of the inner sill structure and buy a reel with the correct bracket, I'm not sure the shoulder point is directly above the floor point. If that's the case then you would have to rotate the reel a few degrees and that could be a PITA as far as unwanted locking was concerned. That's all assuming they still are pendulum activated? Quote
PeterH Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Thanks Peter.... I'd pretty well decided not to try and inertia reel belts.. Has any one else out there gone through the exercise ? Quote
GongZ Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 I found this post about static belts; Well I've gone with the HEMCO lap/sash static belt and they have installed perfectly. Both buckle stems are made for left and right specific so they fit spot on. I spoke to Wayne at the shop and he knew just the items I was after for my 71 Zed. Here's some snaps of all the products I received and a scan of the codes for anyone interested. Cheers Luke Quote
GongZ Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 And you could also have a look at these; http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,100.0.html http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3768.0.html http://206.123.104.159/forum/index.php?topic=13246.0 Quote
twoforty z Posted August 8, 2015 Author Posted August 8, 2015 Cool thanks guys. Good to know my seat belts aren't standard. Id say they would've been installed with the roll bar which was done by the previous owner. Given I have to have my car engineered for the Rb20det i think ill talk to them about having the roll bar and current seat belt setup engineered too if it needs it. If that doesnt work ill order some new ones. Thanks again Quote
PeterH Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 If you are going through the engineering process it might be worth a look at "retrobelt" they do a kit for the 240z in retractable style. Would definitely need to be engineered here. I tried to post the link but I'm doing this ony phone and I'm elderly???? Quote
PeterAllen Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 You need to be careful of 'retro' belts as I doubt they are ADR approved, i.e. Australian Standards. I was really keen to use the 'aircraft style' buckle in the GTO but those produced today do not have AS approval 'Retro' belts are fitted to pre-compulsory cars, e.g. late 50s, early 60s vehicles to maintain an in-period look. Huw Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Original are lap sash fixed with a hooked (and almost useless) buckle. Dad has the originals in his 73. My 71 was mising belts . . . (A worry) but i fitted fixed type. The Hemco style ones are easy and work fine. May get the odd confused passenger yanking on it though! As mentioned by others, overseas belts problematic from ADR perspective. Suggest sticking with locally bought. Huw Quote
