reverendzed Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi guys (particularly Melbourne) I have someone who is willing to make new carpet sets for the Zeds but want to start with the best templates I can find. If you have a set of carpets, that have a great fit that you could loan me for a month or so i would appreciate it. Perhaps if you are in the middle of a resto with your carpets out it would be an advantage. Looking for Series 1 240z, Series 2 240z and 260Z (I think there may be some slight differences between the hatch carpet on these models. Thanks Rev. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2015 Administrators Posted April 28, 2015 Hi Rev, I think my 1970 240z has it's original carpets! I will double-check and take photos when I get a chance, but I find that most aftermarket ones don't have the luggage strap cut outs and there are a few other small differences like around the drivers side dead stop pedal etc... It would be good to get a decent set of reproductions made. Like I say I'll need to double-check and get back to you on that though. Quote
WA240Z Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Hi Rev, Adam (ACF321 ex Brown Hornet) and I used my original 73 carpets as templates for new carpets to be cut in Sydney. I sent the old carpets from Perth over. PM Adam to see if the original carpets still exist, if so he could send them down to you in VIC. These carpets fitted very well, they were just starting to fall apart, mainly the rubber underside, after 40 years. Cheers Billy. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2015 Administrators Posted April 28, 2015 It would be good to see who in Sydney made them for Adam, since they may have the template to make them again. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Good points - if someone already has the template made? I'm hoping my guy is going to be very competitive but as always it depends on volume! Quote
Linton Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I had my local upholsterer make mine, he used very poor quality carpet after two trips in the car where the feet went it was all hairy they now look like shit, I complained and he wasn't interested, Quote

Sounds like a gap in the market for a good quality offering. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 I'm thinking if I put in the hard yards now and get some great templates and quality product it may at least serve the Oz Z market for a few years. Quote
WA240Z Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I will email Adam to see if my old carpets are still around. The hard part to get right with the carpets are the two foot wells. The carpet has to curve in two directions and as the carpets are not moulded a crease is formed, like trying to wrap a sheet of paper around a football. Even after the carpets were cut from my original carpets, as they are cut flat, I still had to "fit" them into the car. This required cutting where the creases were formed in the foot wells, and stitching to create curve. Takes a while, and if a motor trimmer completes the job, the hours will rack up. The under seat sections are pretty easy to fit as well as the rear deck section. I doubt the original carpets were ever very well fitted in the first place compared to today's standards. Quote
matt drago Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Hey Rev, I still have the original Carpets from my '73 240z. I used them as a template with http://www.all-car-carpets.com.au/|All Car Carpets. They are based in Lilydale. I believe that he kept the templates that he made. It cost me about $600 for all the carpets, tray carpet, sound proof mats and installation. You can borrow my original carpets if you like. Just drop me a line. Cheers, Matt Quote
