hey guys, first up Happy New Year to everyone and I hope this will be an awesome year for all.  I'm looking forward to the next drive and meeting some of you guys as I missed the last one because I was lying in hospital having a shoulder reconstruction!!!! Well it's a new year with new opportunities and I have one of those for my rebuild.  I have acquired an F54 L28 Block and an N42 head with a choice of 240 carbs or a rebuilt set of twin Webber's?  My question is what should I be advising my mechanic that I want done? he has spoken about having the motor blueprinted and balanced which is fine however I want to know what I have to do to get maximum grunt out of this rebuild and still be street drivable.  I get one shot at this and then my budget is gone for some time so I really want to get it right.....I could really do with some advise.  I have a budget of about $3000 for the rebuild if that helps.

hey rev if you want some grunt for a budget of $3000 import a L28 turbo setup you should be able to get a turbo setup plus new ecu and intercooler etc for well under $3000 due to you having a f54 block it should be able to take quite a large amount of boost

Dave,

For 3k your not going to get much...

The STD N42 head flows 'ok', so I would be just looking at match porting the head to the manifold.

Go the Webers if you don't mind higher fuel consumption & slightly rougher running down low in the rev range.

Try & get a set of extractors (if you don't already have a set).

A MILD camshaft & new lash-pads & heavier duty valve springs would also be an excellent decision.

As the the N42 head has large chambers, I'd look at a set of standard style flat top pistons to raise the CR a bit.

And at the end of all this, budget $600 for a PROPER session on a rolling road dyno, to set the tune.

I recommend: http://www.powerplay.net.au/

Pauly, unless the Rev. has 5k+ to spend on the conversion & the budget to maintain a L28et engine, this is NOT an option.

Rev, I agree with Luches comments.

Im glad youve mentioned twin carbs and not tripples (for the moment anyway) triples might stretch the budget.

Go for webbers, as latter down the track ,you could buy the extra carb & new manifold and evetually go for the tripples when budget permits,  or if you get sick of the carbs you could even convert webbers to throttle bodies... would looks heaps nicer under the engine bay than L28 EFI setup..

Personally I still love the look , feel & sound of tripple webbers.

my 2 cents ... Electronic distributor. Or if you cant get one at least a rebuild of the points dizzy. Sounds strange but a fully reco'ed or electronic  dizzy with properly working advance/retard makes a big difference.

Just a thought : blow through carby plus a turbo  ?  Dont know how much it would cost but it might be an idea.

Use an Electronic Dizzy from MR30 Skyline = cheap.

Might have to have the Tacho. modded though...

Carby turbo setups are horrid...

Say goodbye to low speed drivability & any reasonable economy...

If the tacho wanders all over the place with the electronic dizzy, all you need is to put in a resistor.  Insert a 50,000 ohm resistor in the line going to the tachometer. I put mine right at the coil. Try to get a 1 watt rated resistor. If the tach won't go the full range then lower resistance to 35000 ohms.

Thanks guys, I already have electronic ignition and extractors on my current L26 setup so I will be able to utilize these on my rebuild.  Does anyone have an idea of what might be a good cam, when we say 'mild' how do I measure that? I'm going to see the mechanic on Tuesday so I am hopeful I will have a better understanding of what I want done before I catch up with him.

Hey Rev do you have a descent exhaust system to go with your extractors? If not then I would recommend you look at a bigger system to suit your extractors and motor mods. No use increasing power in the engine if it is still going to be strangled by a small exhaust system. Just something to consider if not already done. Good luck with it. Get it ready before the next drive.
