Can Facet fuel pumps be used on triple webers?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400797236932?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

My Dyno guy says yes but I'm not sure,

The last rally we DNF at 11 clock at night and got flat towed 60kms out of the forest, so I've replaced the rusty fuel tank, added 3/8 fuel line and thinking of getting 2 Facet pumps to replace the factory original?

I have a carter 4070 too. Also i have no noise issues with it at all, used the factory mount and it's sweet.

From the TEP website:

"Webers work best at approx 4 psi of fuel pressure (Not 2 psi like many of the older books stated.) and you need Volume not Pressure to keep the float bowl full.We ONLY use the Carter Rotary pumps. They are High Volume (60-70 GPH) but only 4 psi."

Some other sites do list them as 4-6psi!

I just bought one 4070 72 gph 4-6 psi, I'm hoping I don't need a reg but i do have a pressure guage at the carbs

The little Facet pumps are perfectly fine. Been in se for many decades.

Run another filter between tank and pump, do not just rely on their small screw in screen filter.

No need for filter in engine bay.

Fit pump at rear, they work better on push, and can be mounted in any position.

A manual set pressure reducer to 4 for 4 cyl, and 4.5 for 6 cyl

Check carby needle and seat for no sticking, or faint ridges on the nrass taper.

I run a reg on mine, for consistency's sake.

Also I just run the factory wires as these things draw a pretty low amount of current.

I'll stick this carter on and T piece a secondhand Facet I have for back up.

At one point I had 3 filters because the tank was so rusty ( car has been parked up for 23yrs) the original  factory pump still makes noise but must be cactus, I'll disconnect and delete the factory reg while I'm at it(shouldn't effect the fuel cut off switch?)  cheers thanks fellas

Well I fitted the Carter  and first thing I noticed was the bloody noise, even with the supplied rubber mounts. Does a good job pushing fuel thru and rated at 5psi but after fitting it to the car I find the power terminals are push on! I thought damn how's that going to go on a rally car....stage 5 10kms in I found out as the car came to a halt, +ve lead off lost more than a minute there then 200m from the end of stage the car starts losing power once more, managed to coast into finish and guess what -ve lead off!

I was a bit shitty thinking I'd fixed one fuel problem with this new pump to have another one!

To top it all off because I jumped out of the car the in a rage the second time my intercom was still connected, coat hangered myself and damaged the intercom lead meaning I couldn't hear my navigator

joys of rallying

I'm really interested to see how you mounted it in regard to the noise.

Tough luck on the terminals, although sounds like you identified them as a problem on install?

Yeah screw down is an option apparently, I didn't know why would anyone want push on. problem was this was Monday when it arrived and I had to set off thursday for rally recce so had to chance it.

I mounted it to the factory fuel bracket, using the supplied L bracket with its 3 rubber isolaters for pump.

It just sounds like a washing machine on spin cycle

I meant where did you mount it?

This is where mine is:

Factory fuel pump bracket RHS

Yours looks a bit cleaner than mine,

we had a torrential down pour on the rally the worst conditions I've ever had to race in

Maybe you are getting some resonance from the long factory pump bracket. I'm surprised you are using it as it's so freakin heavy!!! I got one with the intentions of doing what you are, but after I felt how much it weighed I binned it. You can just bolt the carter mount onto the the same bolt positions that the factory bracket uses.

With mine, when the fuel system is finished i will cut off the bottom of the bracket and bend a bit of it under that bar so it cant twist side to side and loctite that bolt in. I used the filter holder from the bracket and screwed it to the top of the pump mount to keep it all snug under there.

Be mindful of how high you place the pump in relation to the tank, many pumps are good at pushing fluid but not good at sucking fluid. My Mallory 4070LP fuel pump installation manual suggests "the pump should be placed level or below the fuel tank pickup.

I had a 3mm thick aluminium fuel pump bracket made up that looks similar to the standard bracket, I actually have 2 spare brackets if anyone is interested in them. I will upload a pic later if anyone is interested?

BTW the Mallory pump I have used is very quiet and doesn't need an external regulator for carbs, as it has an internal reg set to approx 3-4 psi.

Cheers

The carter does the same thing with the fuel pressure, but if you want to ensure exact fuel pressure then it's a good idea to still run a reg.

I read the mounting instructions for the carter and it says that mounting it at the height we have it is fine. I can't remember the specifics, but it was definitely well within spec.

Hadn't thought of that, might be like a big tuning fork!

Only kept it as rally cars tend to have two pumps so it will give so more room to mount the second

carters are to be mounted btw bottom of tank and no more than 24'' above it
