Gearbox filler plug seized

Guys,

 

As the subject line says, I'm in need of some black magic so I can remove filler plug. I don't really wish to pull engine and box out to remove the seized plug.

 

Any tips would be great.

Take for a 20 min drive. Try again as soon as you get back.

 

You can also try tightening it a tiny bit more, then when it moves start undoing it.

I've drained the old oil out before I tried loosening it. Will a hair dryer or heat gun do the same?

It's a common mistake, you'll only do it once and from now on you'll always crack the filler plug before draining the oil. Same goes for the diff too.

 

Try the tightening method. A heat gun might work but I doubt a hair dryer will get it hot enough.

I've had this though not on a z. The filler actually burred so it was stuffed.

 

I heated it up with a blowtorch then hit it with a hammer and screwdriver to turn it

yeah be careful not to round off the plug,

 

I've had to do the hammer & screwdriver trick to one of my previous cars but it was a swaybar link where the nut rounded on me.

 

I've read on here or another forum that you can fill up the gearbox using the breather hole inside the cabin where the shifter is? you might have to take out the ash tray or remove the shifter boot but I'm sure someone on here can confirm

Had the same issue on my box I  the track car. Had to remove the box to get it out in the end. What I don't get is why people have do them up to tight. They are a tapered thread and will seal just fine without the big over tighten.

Going to use the propane bottle and heat around plug, the sametime as using a trolley jack on pipe wrench to leaver it. If that won't move it... Well I guess motor and box will be coming out :-\

You can take just the box out. Just make sure you have something to stop the engine from leaning to far back.

Why do people over tighten them....?  INEXPERIENCE!

 

If you can get at the plug, a hammer and cold chisel will work to remove. When you reinstall, apply neverseize to the threads and do NOT over tighten. Although we used to lockwire them in the Nissan race cars, I never saw them loosen and actually test the wire. Just nip them up and they will come straight out every time.

Couldn't get it out so I jacked the car onto a 30deg lean removed the reverse switched and filled her up. Problem solved the gearbox stayed in the car.
