vramjee91 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Hi guys, Just been driving my 240z around, and there seems to be some very high revs and poor gear changing response. It has a L26, with a 280zx box, along with a standard 240z diff. I know its a long shot, but does anyone know why this might be the case? is it the ratios? Cheers Vivek Quote
d3c0y Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 You need to be way more specific. What exactly do you mean by high revs? Is the car idling high? Sitting on a lot of RPM on the highway? What does poor gear changing response mean? Quote
dat2kman Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 What have you changed, to now be getting high rpm's on engine? Quote
vramjee91 Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I would like to note that I am not a mechanic by trade, so please excuse the plain language. There hasnt been much change. The car hasnt been running, and now is the first time. The L26 was originally in a 260z I previously had, but had an auto box attached to it. I then swapped it over to a manual, and dropped it into my 240z. The gearbox is a standard 280zx box, and the diff is the normal diff you would get in an auto 71 240z. When it starts off in first gear and you put the foot down, there is a really high rev, then when you change gears the revs dont drop as you would expect. This occurs in 2nd and 3rd gear. There also doesnt seem to be much response when putting the foot down, not sure if this because of the high revs or what. When I drove my 260z around, it was lot smoother, and a lot more responsive. lampy Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Sounds like your clutch is slipping. You might need to adjust the rod on the clutch slave cylinder Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 6, 2014 Moderators Posted June 6, 2014 Sounds like your clutch is slipping. You might need to adjust the rod on the clutch slave cylinder I agree... could your clutch be worn? or not engaging fully? The auto diff is a 3.5:1 and the 280ZX first gear ratio would be a 3.2:1. I'd be checking the clutch. Quote
Retro Z Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Yep sounds like the clutch is slipping. Did you install a new clutch and machine the old flywheel? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 6, 2014 Administrators Posted June 6, 2014 Easy test, when your cruising along in 4th gear at a low rpm like say 2500 rpm, floor the accelerator pedal and if the car starts to rev high and not go anywhere then suddenly feels like it starts to grip and move then you know it's a clutch slipping issue. How old is the clutch and when was it last replaced? Did you use a second hand clutch? Quote
