luvemfast Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Anyone ever bought one of those cheap double din, touch screen car stereos that are on eBay? I want one for the wife's car, with 2 inputs for reverse cameras, sat nav, Bluetooth, sub out, video out and the other typical features. There are so many available that it makes your head spin. So any help would be great. Quote
Sirpent Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Simon Stuck one into the old probe about 5 years ago......................... One word FANTASTIC, for about a month then the small switches stopped working, and it started to fall apart. All the go now is to install an iPad mini, and yes dont ask, will update my thread at a later date. John Quote
sydney mike Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I bought one from an Aussie seller, from memory around $400 for my daily '09 corolla about 2 years ago. It was fitted with the toyota plug so even a dope like me could fit it in 10 mins during my lunchbreak in a westfields car park. GPS, dvd, digital TV, usb, ipod connect, reverse camera, bluetooth. I've got nearly my whole mp3 library in a usb stick. Tv reception is dodgy when car is moving (not that I watch & drive). They say it picks up HDtv but having probs with that. I mainly needed the GPS (for work) and that works great-really fast and lots of settings. Maybe 3 times a year the GPS freezes, just have to reset then all good again. So all in all I'm happy with mine. I haven't had any probs with mine but I can only suggest you pay a little more for an aussie seller in case you have any probs. cheers, Mike. Quote
Ledge Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Simon I got one off eBay but from local seller as well DIGOPTIONS I think it was. I got it for Bluetooth and Satnav, the reverse camera is great as well I can get the tow ball right below the hitch every time now LOL It was 400. Well worth it IMO I've had no problem at all and it came plug and play. Just had to hook up the camera and run wire through for that. but it came with wires etc. Cheers Quote
luvemfast Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Was it this guy Paul? http://stores.ebay.com.au/DIG-Options?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 Theres so many options............. Quote
George Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I had one, although not an eBay one. Excitement wears off and then it just becomes another thief magnet. Quote
zedevan Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 You could purchase one of the doubledin headunits thats a full pc? http://e3io.com/custom-computers-car-pc there's bound to be android versions too if that's you're preferred flavor I'm going to replace my outdated 10" touchscreen/carputer setup with an ipad with a data simcard once the car's running again, mounted via some sort of cradle on an ram mount or similar, ie and just use something like a foxl as the speakers mounted in the place of a headunit - yet to see a headunit with a screen thats anywhere near as nice and easy to read in full daylight, plus this being removable removes the risk of theft and the money spent has a use outside of the car The one thing it will never easily give you though is a reverse camera when you change gears...but could hook up a gopro alternative which lets you view the camera via an app? Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 28, 2013 Moderators Posted November 28, 2013 Bought a Kenwood double DIN unit without GPS as I run a seperate GPS unit as when its time to update maps, it doesn't cost the earth to get new maps. Works great with a rear camera, and watch DVD's when I'm bored (mainly in heavy traffic). They are all made in China nowadays so no matter which brand you buy :-\ Quote
luvemfast Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 Yes they're all made in China these days. But you get cheap crap. And you can get the good stuff. I work in manufacturing and know you need to police the good stuff, that's why it costs more. The cheap products aren't monitored, that's why it fails. I ended up using the same guy Paul recommended. Good service and product at a reasonable cost. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 28, 2013 Moderators Posted November 28, 2013 What we have found is everything is made to whatever the customer wants to pay; the cheaper the price per unit and they'll source the cheapest, nastiest components they can find so that means more failures. Quote
DreamZproject Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I've often thought of one of these for the Z. What i thought would be a good idea is get on of the single DIN ones (that will fit into the Z radio slot) That has one of those fold out screens (7" roughly). This means that the car can still look period correct when the screen is tucked away, or a media centre when you want it to be. Quote
DreamZproject Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 These two could probably look pretty nice in a Z... Not 100% sure about fitment. http://b2b.eonon.com/details.aspx?pro_id=1557&product_no=G1311A http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/25/109/281/AVH-X7550BT/page.html Quote
