Electric Fuel Pump - Two connected in parallel ??

Hi All ,

 

My recently acquired car has no mechanical pump , so while the engine is out I decided to have a look at my electric fuel pump and see if it could do with a clean/service. Now after taking it out I am a little confused by the setup.

 

Why would there be two pumps connected in parallel ?  ,  a backup pump maybe ?

 

The larger pump is a Mallory series 70 , which my research shows is a 70gph pump , running at either 4 or 6psi. I can't seem to tell exactly which one it is because it only has the model number 4070 , not 4070LP( 4psi ) or 4070M( 6psi ).

 

The smaller pump is labelled as a Nikki ( Type SB-10 ) , is this the original ?

 

I would have thought that the Mallory would be more capable ?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps the Nikki item is just a solenoid. It's not oem.

I just pulled the cover off and its not a pump.

 

Please excuse my ignorance ( as I haven't researched the answer to this question ), but what role does it play ?

 

I can see by its direction of flow that it feeds from the pumps outlet back into the pumps feed line.

It looks to have a 4mm orifice fitted, I would assume this reducing the pump pressure so it supplies the correct fuel pressure to the carbs.

That is incorrect, it is definitely OEM as i have the same fuel pump setup on my work bench and that pressure regulator is fitted to it too.

I'm going to follow it up with another silly question. 

 

I am going to be fitting triple webers , will this setup provide me with the correct fuel pressure I need ?  , My understanding is that I need 3 to 5 psi ( please correct me if I am wrong ).

 

I am sure the workshop I using will be able to test it , but if I can save time ( money ) changing the setup myself , then I will do so.

Su hitachis and webers will run a similar pressure, when i meant it's not oem i was referencing the fuel pump. Here's a pic (no goats this time)

The Nikki item IS your fuel pressure reg, it is factory fixed, it is original.

Your fuel pump is aftermarket, the original Hitachi pump no doubt died and was replaced.

 

If going to triple carbs, do not rely on that old press reg, instead, fit a new pump, at rear, ie where this is, and then run a feed line into engine bay, to a new adjustable pressure reg, then to a fuel feed block that will distribute evenly to all three carbs. You could use a few Y fittings and hose to do same thing, looks a bit messy.

 

For a new fuel pump, consider a Facet solid state electric, they are compact, and while at it, set up a second one, with a loop of fuel hose, as a back up just in case pump......

I have been researching Facet solid state fuel pumps. Logic ( and my knowledge of plumbing ) would tell me to buy the 6-9 psi model and couple it with an adjustable regulator under the bonnet.

 

The most exciting part ( yes I know.... it's sad ) is that the Facet pump claims to be able to draw from a 12 inch head height , versus the Mallory , who's instructions say it should be located as close to, if not lower than the feed line. Considering my current pump is clearly at least 8 inches above the draw line the Facet pump looks very appealing.

 

Unless  anyone tells me otherwise , I will be ordering a couple of Facets tomorrow .
