KatoKid Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Hi all. Looking for someone that custom builds high performance mufflers in stainless, DPE looks like the only real option so far. Thanks. David Quote
zed240au Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 What are you looking for in particular I run a exhaust shop and do lot of custom work there are lots of options out there But id need more info to make a recommendation Regards mick Quote
dat2kman Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Do a google for "gonzo Mufflers" Based in Brisbane, can fabricate to your specs, they do not contain any steel wool or fibreglass, but are based on a giant course screw shape, inside a outer cylinder, to "break" the soundwaves, no restriction, but quieten the car down markedly. I'm running them on race cars that have to comply to Lakeside raceway nouse limits ( strict) He does a lot of V8 custom stuff. Dont get talked into a full system, just the mufflers, and what you can fit under your car Quote

Have a look at the last page on my build thread for the general idea. See below for a profile of the resonator which would be 24 inches (600mm) long. Excuse the imperial but I relate to that better when talking pipe sizes...its a little like dick sizes...no one quotes millimeters! Quote

My Nephew has them on his car but they are just too big to fit in the space I have available. Quote
zed240au Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Checked all the mufflers I could today but nothing matches the sizes u require Spoke to our supplier that makes mufflers to order he was concerned with how narrow u want muffler suggested if u could squeeze it out to 7" wide he would be much happier to make Would suggest u check your car see if u can squeeze 7" for the length u want Id think u could as im running twin 3" pipes on my car with gap between them and still clears tunnel Id suggest u allow 3/8 to 1/2" gap around muffler I can still make u a muffler up to your size if needed let me know if u can squeeze in extra inch Mick Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 David, try AM Performance........? http://www.amperformance.com.au/ Andrew is his name, has had some great sounding, big numbers etc. I do believe also involved with Wilal racing too. lots of experience with RB powered cars amongst the SRs and VQ/VR to name a few.... I would suggest you have a look before committing to buy Nat0 Quote
nizm0zed Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 let me know if u can squeeze in extra inch Thats what she said! (yea, im immature ) For a little extra room, could you possibly widen up the tunnel edge a bit more? It'd be a bit involved, but in the grand scheme you'd only be talking about pushing out a very small area of metal. Quote

I'm running standard BMW engine mounts so there will be the normal amount of deflection of hard acceleration and deceleration, the last thing I want to do is to have to change things after I have it on the road to avoid the exhaust hitting anything. Can you elaborate as to why the extra inch is so important, I think I can guess but would like to hear from you? Thanks Nato too. Quote
rb25240z Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 You could try AES mufflers in woolongong. He can make them up to your drawings and is very easy to deal with. A lot of rotories use them so you know they are high flow and can handle punishment. My 20b car went from 115 db at 5000rpm (ear plugs and still unplesant) to a nice tuff note just by swaping the rear muffler. Only thing is im not sure about stainless but worth checking them out. Look on ausrotary to see feed back on his mufflers Quote
chris240 Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I recommend Mick from Devonport..... When dealing with a forum member and zed owner, well, It just seems the right thing to do Quote
zed240au Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 With the width I think the size u suggest is very narrow for the pipe size of 2.25" Any commercial built mufflers like this are 8" wide even hotdogs would be 3.5' wide by 2 total 7" U need some space inside muffler to make it work Id be concerned that with only .5" around outside of tubes how effective muffler would be Might even be worth considering 2 long hotdogs or even 4 shorter hotdogs instead of custom muffler We have had lot of success doing this on VE commodores v8s I know 3/8 to 1/2" don't sound a lot but my rule of thumb fitting systems is if I can get my finger tip in the space little chance of it hitting works on most systems barr some diesel turbos which do torque a lot Would think the Bmw mounts would be reasonably solid and not allow a lot of movement On my car im running 2 15"spiral mufflers in front of diff and 2 12" hotdogs under diff with single rear muffler in standard placement spirals and hotdogs being 3" internals are 4" outside diameter Mick Quote
Johnboy Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Not knowing much about these things all I can say is Mick's system is a work of art, the most impressive system I have seen on a zed, i had a good look at it while it was on the hoist, and he was great to deal with. Any guy that will drive 100k with a trailer, pick your car up and get the head gasket replaced and back on the road the next day to save your "Halliday in Tassie" is a good guy to know. Cheers and good luck with the system. Johnboy Quote
