Steve Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Gday All I have a 260z that has the flat top or English SUs, if thats correct, but they are not the best carbies compared to my 240z, with Hitachi round top carbies. I am wondering if I change them to 240 carbies or if its worth trying out triple carbies. Which is always been a dream of mine. Secondly if to put triple carbies, would I need to do any other major engine modifications to really get the best out of the carbies. I just run a standard l26 with extractors. If not, can I do bits and pieces like just adding a heavier cam as well?? Overall I like to keep things relatively basic and not get too carried away. Thanks Quote
Toecutter Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Hi Steve, the original 260 carbs are he flat tops. Not very good. Using the 240 round tops is generally said to give better performance. As far as going to tripples goes I've been told by many you will not see much of a benefit in terms of power to 240 SU's on a stock motor. Perahps little more at top end depending on the set up but it might not be as good down low like the SU's. You would get the most benefit from the tripples with a non stock motor that you wanted to run at higher revs for occasioanl street use or a track car. You will find alot of different opinions on this topic but 240 SU's are considered good reliable carbs that can give pretty good performance and reliability. I've just dropped an L28 into my 260 2 seater and I've got a set of tripple dellortos ready to go but not before a mild cam is installed. The car is currently running on 240 SU's and I've had them for years with excellent reliability. If my car was a daily driver I certainly would'nt run it on tripples however thats just my personal preference. Oh and the tripples sound and look great hey!! Sulio Quote
sco_aus Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Im certainly no expert on L series engines, but I reckon if the tripples are better on worked engines and better flowing up high, they would multiply the gain got from a cam? Sort of like putting big injectors on a stock engine, you wont get mcuh out of it until you do more work then it multiplies the gains. Please correct me if im wrong, im endevouring to learn more about them since I pretty much changed straight to RB. Quote
chris240 Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Steve I replaced my original hitachi carbs for my L24 about a month ago with new "pommy" su's. I had trouble finding a carbie kit for the hitachis, when I did it was around $130 per kit + labour to install & re-tune. They work great as my motor is stock. Ive left the original orange oval cleaner in place for the moment, but will replace it the next few weeks with pair of a ram-flow domes & socks. I still wanted the engine bay to look as original as "practicle" I just got the shits with the hitachis....and 2nd hand carbies alltogether. I dont recommend triples. The carbs cost me $730 for the pair incl new linkages. Performance Plus in Queanbeyan did the work. Ive stored the Hitachi's away (for originality sake !) Quote
Steve Posted September 12, 2007 Author Posted September 12, 2007 Thanks for the input So far the the zed has been running good, just takes a long time for it to come off the choke before it will idle well. My 240 felt like it had a lot more go. Seems like triples then are totally out How far would you need to go to get a basic hot set up to put triples on. Would you need to throw in an l28 and bore it out etc etc Still wanting to keep the car as a daily driver and keeping it practicle.. Quote
Toecutter Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Well I'm about to bolt on tripple Dellorotos to a recently installed stock L28. Only other parts on the motor as they are: L28 dizzy, headers through 2 1/4" exhaust. I'm currently running the L28 on 240 SU's, runs well. I've been advised you can spend alot of money getting the tripples running correclty in terms of getting jetting right but I guess I'll find out in the coming weeks! :'( Sulio Quote

Steve for a budget build I would suggest the following combo: L28 Block F54 / N42 Head giving 10:1 Compression Ratio Give the engine head a tidy up but nothing too drastic. I'd put a mid range cam in it to give it a bit more life. Electronic distributor E12 Module (Make sure it's advancing - might need a rebuild) 240z SU's with richer needles (SM needles apparently are good). Then I'd focus on a better ratio diff say 3.9 (LSD if you can) Match it with a close ratio box (260z 5 speed) It should go relatively well then. However even with those milder mods it will still cost you a few thousand dollars for the parts. I guess it depends how resourceful you are. Quote
Steve Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 Thanks again guys for the info, its good to get some clarification on things. Quote
