Whats a paint job cost in Melbourne???

If I did the hard work of stripping and hand over a rolling shell in primer what would a good spray job cost in Melbourne?

 

Also anyone still doing spray jobs on old cars, most guys simply focus on insurance jobs?

Not helping but, in Brisbane i have used a bloke who had acces to his bosses booth, on a sat arvo, and car had to be gone by 7am monday morn, would strip, leave glass in, was buzzed back, he would then hit it with his sander, we'd prepsol together, stick it in the booth, hit it with one coat primer, turn on heat, wait an hour, then under heat hit it with 2k ( 2pack) be done by 10 pm sat night, leave it to bake on Sunday.

Had a Chevrolet Belair four door done, cost me $800

A 120Y done cost $500

A convertible two door Dat 2000 done, cost $400

 

If you can find someone, and be prepared to do the prep work, hang around and help prepsol and mask up, you will be appreciated

Unless your a skilled prepper mate I would leave it to a pro.  For a good paintjob its 90% prep - 10% paint

Also prep work won't just be primer, what about all the filler work, have you set up all the panel gaps, you don't want to be working out your gaps after paint to find out something doesn't work, believe me there is a LOT of hours involved in the stages before paint.

My answer in short, budget $1000 minimum if you don't have some sort of hook up.

 

Long answer, it all comes down to what you want from the car. Are you after a show room condition car or a respectable cruiser?

 

I have personally done the whole 'prep work myself and get a pro to do the top coat', and like many have said before me, most of the finish is from the prep work. Prep work will involve rust repairs, paint stripping/sanding, priming and block sanding, and panel adjustments, to name a few. Each step taking weeks, months, years.. Depending again on how well you want the finish.

 

I did the best I could, a lot depends on motivation, and when I dropped my car off at the panel beaters, they were picking out imperfections left right and centre. They were all minor but my point is, if you want a show room turnout, get a pro to do everything. If you want a respectable job, give it a crack yourself.

Edit: How long a job lasts probably depends on the prep work/stage too, and the paint you spray with which adds to final costs.

My 2 cents, if you want to give it a go yourself. Get a practice panel first and see how it turns out. Small investment and you'll soon find out if you're motivated to do a whole car.
