240z hatch strut

Can anyone tell me which hatch strut in the pic is for a 240z?

My 73 is the top one. By looking i guess either will fit guess the 2nd rod would just open it higher?

The 240 will use the bottom strut. When that one is installed on, the access to the bolt heads will be towards the inside (middle) of the hatch.

 

The other one would place the access to the outside. Which would mean it gets installed on the right side (Driver side for you Aus people).

 

Also the bottom strut looks more like my '73 strut than the top one.

The bottom one looks the same as on my '74 260, & also a spare I have off a 240.

The top one doesn't look like any S30 Zed one I've ever seen. Also looks too short. Could be off anything, or quite possibly an aftermarket generic replacement.

I'll try upload a pic of mine tomorrow. Mine is definately the shorter top one in the pic. Could be aftermarket but i have another of the same in a box that were removed off a  jap fairlady z parts car.

FWIW, my 260 2-seat pair & also my RH spare off a 240 - originals - are approx 635mm measured pivot-bolt centre (body end) to centre of rawl pin on bracket (hatch end).

I still reckon the top one in the photo looks like a generic replacement, with it's bolt-on ball-stud mountings at both ends. The only part that looks Datsun/Nissan is the bracket for fixing to the hatch.

The lower one looks genuine, still with it's Nissan sticker which matches mine.

I think you guys are right because as mentioned the longer one has a nissan sticker the shorter one doesn't ( i thought it did but it was just japanese writing)

Thanks Locky, looks like the longer strut I've got is actually a right side strut as the mount that bolts to the hatch on mine is flipped the other way but the gold mount on the other strut is for a left hand fitment ( I"m guessing thats what the "L" stamped into it means  ) so I'll swap the gold mount out to the longer strut then fit it up!

Yeah many of the 240s if not all of them only had the single strut & benefit from the addition of a second as per the 260s, if it's not too late to add the required fixings.

My 240z doesnt have that bracket. Bolted straight to the captive nut in the body...hrmm must have been modified.

Well, struts wear out & leak & de-gas so get replaced with generic items. The 240 / 260 hatch is heavy & would be a PITA once the strut(s) are stuffed. I'm thinking that maybe only the last of the 240s had the pair of struts like the 260s, so a single strut is having to work hard.

When I lived in Auckland there was even a mobile service which provided gas strut replacement at your home or workplace, used it myself (daily driver, not my Zed). Was very cost effective.
