Magnet Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Never been big on build threads, but it feels different with the 240 Bought the '71 240 on eBay as a rolling shell back in Nov(2012). It was missing some gear but was a good body with a lot of original paint and not much rust. Came with the original block in the passenger footwell, which kinda forced my hand to restoring it rather than chopping it up for flares and an SR or RB(which still may happen:)) It's been off the road for a long time, at least 20years I think, so had to do a brake system overhaul. It Chassis appears to have low kms as well, can't find any history on the car though, NSW RTA has no record of it, QLD wouldn't give me anything, nothing on the PPSR. Anyone know anything about the car? HS30-01273 Got a complete L26 with big cam, extractors and 240 SUs off a mate intending to put all the gear on the original block, but decided to just get it running as is first. As it sits currently, getting close to paint. Got the engine running the other day, need to make an exhaust next, not making any friends in the neighborhood currently Hopefully going to have it registered by June - Ryan Quote
Scoota G Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Nice, i thick Decoy still has an exhaust up your way for sale!?! Quote
Magnet Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 Saw that a while ago, want to do twin pipes at the back, can save $$$ by doing it myself, might even do stainless Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 4, 2013 Moderators Posted March 4, 2013 Nice progress! problem with twins on a 240 is that there isn't much room underneath in the trans tunnel. Hardest thing I found was trying to find a 2 in 2 out center muffler. Came across one by chance at an exhaust place; guy came in with a near new stainless one and changed his system. I also get a slight hesitation while accelarating..not sure if that is cam or the exhaust setup. Quote
Magnet Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 Sorry I mean twin tips, don't want to go overboard as I'll probably be swapping it out. Read a few threads on here, seems the droning at low rpm is an issue. Looking at running a Hooker aerochamber muffler(just to be different) not sure whether to run it in the middle or the back. Would be nice to have twin raw stainless pipes coming out the back but not sure if I'm going to be able to fit a decent muffler underneath. Quote
Magnet Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Running and driving now, made a 2.25" exhaust with straight through muffler at back, sounds amazing at idle Final 2pac prime, hopefully paint it before I go to the US in a week Fixing dash Deciding what paint to use for the dash, the stuff in the dashboard resto sticky looks good, probably use that if I any find something a bit more original looking Quote
Scoota G Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Great work, coming along a quite a pace. What about painting the dash with wrinkle finish paint that they use for rocker covers? Quote
Magnet Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Yeah I was thinking about that, did it on my rocker cover too. I think it may be a little course though? Might look good with armor all on it, might do a test run on something else Quote
benny Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Yeah I was thinking about that, did it on my rocker cover too. I think it may be a little course though? Might look good with armor all on it, might do a test run on something else the wrinkle finish (VHT) really needs to be baked for it to work 100% i would be worried that it would scratch to easily aswell. zzzzed Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I used a heat gun on my wrinkle paint and it worked fine. But you must have good control or it will come up in even Quote
Magnet Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Yeah I use a heat gun and spread it around, doesnt work if you leave it like you're meant to unless you apply it like a champ. I know it can handle heat but is it gonna be able to handle UV? Quote
Magnet Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 Well I used the wrinkle paint, very happy with the result Lot of texture, but I think after rubbing some armor all stuff on it, should flatten out/shine up a bit and look more vynil like Quote
Magnet Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 Progress has been slow, been overseas and fixing up a 13 as a daily Put a ground coat on to rub back before proper colour, show up/fill any imperfections Quote
Magnet Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 Been busy What's the general feeling about orange peel with these cars? Originally I wanted to cut it dead flat, but I'm almost out of steam and looks decent. Just need rubbers, seats and throttle linkages and its time for reg Quote
MyEnquiringMind Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 great work Magnet, love the wrinkle finish... really nice looking ride as well... keep it up and despite your lack of interest in a build thread, I thank you for doing so, love to see the milestones and remember them with my own car... good memories... Cheers, Jarrod. Quote
Retro Z Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Most modern cars come with a fair bit of orange peel from the factory. I reckon just leave it for a few months and when energy/motivation is back spend a day wet sanding and buffing and it should come up nice. Quote
Magnet Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 Yeah I'll probably leave it, be hard as a rock by then though Fitted front lip and starting on bonnet Quote
Stivva Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 You could put a matte clear on the dash that contains urethane to rubberise the texture? Quote
Magnet Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Yeah that'd work, although I just put armor all over it, looks pretty good Some legend sold me the wrong gauges and i cracked the dash in one spot trying to make them fit, very frustrating Quote
too_much_boost Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Looking good. I have a pair of crappy 260z seats you could borrow for rego if you needed to Quote
260z blues Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 Hey there. Is this car still around. Just curious as it was in my possession for awhile as my first zed. Love to see where it is now or what's happened to it. Cheers. Quote
