BatmansDatsun Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 G'day Guys So I am getting super close to having my engine back together and have a few final points I am unsure on, so if any of you can lend me your knowledge it would be much appreciated. So to it. Point #1 Running the engine in/ seating the rings. What is the best proven method as I have known of many different ones. Point #2 Does anyone have a full list of all the bolts threads and lengths just for reference. for the engine and its components.. Pics attached any advice on what to do next with the engine? Quote
Scoota G Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I like to wear em in like i drive em. Rev limiters for others. Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 'Generally' speaking, just load that sucker up - find some steep hills to go up. No need to rev the tits off it. Quote
d3c0y Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Gotta bed the rings in where they're gonna be used like Scoota said haha. Quote
BatmansDatsun Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 So basically just drive it normally? is there a K limit some guys are saying 500k some are saying 700-900.. How long before I can literally have a good crack at my local track? I am keen as beans to see what a rebuilt L6 goes compared to the L5.5/L5 I have been driving for the last 7 months. Plus it will be good to have a second car haha. Quote
peter mc Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 drive it for a hour set the tappets change the oil and filter and your set, drive it normaly , dont let it idle for to long and set the idle fast for the first day or so , just to keep the oil up around the cam , run 20, w 50 non sin and dont rpm it to hard for the first hours if its a new cam Quote
nissag250 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I heard some one talking about diesel oil for the break-in first run ? is it right? And what about "hard breaking " procédure ? Quote
nizm0zed Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 so long as the diesel oil is correctly rated to work in the engine, which lets face it, pretty much everything on the shelf is rated for a 40 year old L series motor, then Yes, you can use Diesel oil. It contains stronger detergents in it and will help to clean out the inside of a motor. I wouldn't personally use it as a run in oil, but as something to clean out the motor every 50,000kms it'd be ok. There are specific monograde run in oils, with specific additive packs incorporated into them. I would recommend using one of them. Penrite do a nice one that i have had a lot of success with. Im not sure what 'hard braking' is when it comes to running in? My procedure is to keep the revs and load as varied as possible for at least the first 500kms. Keep the idle high, dont let it sit and idle for extended periods. Load it up on a hill in a lower gear for a bit then rev it right out. make sure you let the engine rev right up to its redline under load a couple of times, then dump the break in oil at about 500kms. For the next 500kms, i personally prefer to do it in one stretch, go for a nice long drive, keep the engine working well. Drive it the way its going to be treated for the rest of its life. Do your next oil change at 1000kms, then move on to regular servicing schedules. Quote
