donk is out
« on: March 21, 2010, 06:27:49 AM »
My L24 is currently being swapped for a S2 L28 by my friendly mechanics just up the road..
I'll put my HU6 pommy SU's to start with. Weve changed the rear seal and are in the process of swapping parts and other bits and pieces....elec dizzy, upgraded alternator, changing harmonic balancer from 2 belt to the single off the L24 (much lighter)..
Im going to put the mech fuel pump on as I dont feel I need an elec pump...
anyway hopefully should be running by next weekend. ::)

p.s. I'll have a heap of L28 Efi gear and aircon bits from the L28 to sell cheaply.

I hope your keeping the L24 if it's matching numbers Chris...
Oh & you may need to change the needles in the SU's to suit the L28.

Lurch
I read on here somewhere that you had to remember to do "something" when swapping the mech fuel pump ...any idea  ???
with the current SU's my L24 was running a tad rich...see what happens.

Well if your going to reinstall the Mech fuel pump on the side of the head, your going to have to retrofit the eccentric cam on the front of the cam sprocket, over to the L28.
It's an easy bolt on, bolt off process though :)

When I put my L28 in and initially fired it up I found I was'nt getting any fuel from the pump. Anyhow as the L28 was injected it did'nt have the small off center cam like washer that from memory had to be bolted to the cam!??? Take it off the old motor.
Also if it's an L28 thats come from an auto don't forget to add that brass bush where the gearbox shaft mates to the engine. I hope you understand my crap descritptions. maybe someone else can give it all a more proffesional interpretation.

Cheers,
Sulio

EDIT: Ah as above. Lurch must have posted whilst I was posting.

I'm like teh Ninja! W000000SH.....

Oh & Sulio also raised another point - if it IS an ex auto L28, don't forget to install a Spigot bush in the back of the crank for the gearbox input shaft.

quick update...L28 went in today and fired up 1st go !
I got a call from the guys in the workshop who said when they turned the ignition off and removed the key, it still ran ! I laughed my head off and said it was probably alternator related..I may have to install an external Bosch regulator (as per Rb30x posting before X-mas)..either that or I put the original 240z alternator back on for a few weeks anyway..

update...
ended up bridging the existing external regulator & putting a diode on the back of the "L" plug at the rear of the alternator....(I copied WarrenZ detail from a year ago..r.i.p. if your looking down....)

I hate fiddly things that delay you...
while in the workshop the water pump decided to leak....swapped the pump from the L24 over to the L28 and a big thanks to Alan (nismoZed) for the gasket he had in stock..Then we struggled to find the lower half of the water thermostat housing, Ive been told these are no longer available is that right ??
anyway, she got reassembled and turned over nicely....then I had to go back to work, so I never got a chance to go for a blat around the block.. :(
Suprising how different the exhaust note is from an L24 to a L28...I reckon the L24 sounds raspier and sharper..

Not yet, had a couple of offers. Not far off the mark but in the middle of negotiations with a fella. I'm keen on an old rusty 240 to stick under a tarp so heads up mate. I want to ensure I have a Zed for the furture even if I have to put off fixing for a while.

Keen to hear what you think about the power difference going from the 24 to the 28.

Cheers,
Sulio

Picked up myS2- L28 240z from the workshop this arvo and went for a spirited drive...ya cant wipe the smile off my face  ;D ;D
Its definetely more torquey in the mid range and feels smoother. We swapped the carbs over and put the elec dizzy back on and the car just iddled & purred beatifully without having to fiddle the carbs at all..fairdinkum those HU6's are reliable.
Dimitri, We fixed the alternator by looping some wires in the regulator and putting a diode inline with the back of the alternator "T" ....damn thing cost me 25cents ! Worked as you said, thanks for the early morning phone hook-up much appreciated  8)
As soon as I can find another 40mm dcoe (I have 2)and appropriate emulsion tubes, jets, & chokes etc, I'll bolt on my japanese FET manifold and tripples.
We also ran cold & hot compression test on the cylinders for peace of mind and all 6 registered 150.0 ..Im stoked !
A big thanks to the boys at BP Waramanga..They really enjoyed working on the motor and the zed..
Sulio..Let me know what your budget is...i may have a 77 2door shell + parts i can get my hands on..in top nick.
