  1. Ok Well 6 hours from whoa to go. ( done head gasket changes before on a jag and a few v8's but 6 hours is pretty good for me ) Writing a wee post on how it was all done with a few pics on the way. Will have everything i needed from oil /coolant oil filter new gaskets all that with prices ( as of 27 July 2009 ) . Hopefully it will be useful for someone who is searching for this info. Scootag : nice find Could have used that 2 days ago .
  2. Ok so took a bmw it was great . But the head gasket blew. So I gotta take the head off. In my research i have found some information about the 5th cylinder cooling problems and as such will be looking at doing some modifications to the radiator and thermo fans as well so this is a golden opportunity to get the cooling fixed as well . but some good news. 1. The gasket set i ordered is on special ! I get 93 bucks off. 2. Found a davies craig fan setup i ordered for the xb coupe that i didnt use so I can now have 2 on the datto. Which should help the 5th cylinder prob. I do have to reroute another 12 v feed for the other fan. ( currently running one big arsed fan ) Now I just need a knowledgeable large breasted woman to do the work on my car for me while i quaff beers at an abnormally fast rate supervising her work. Not out of the realms of possibility. Pics to come of destruction and build up as /when it all happens.
  3. I dont want to spill this into my own build details as I hope that i'll get some pics so this can be searched in the future. So check my build thread for the good news. It involves gaskets , breasts , beer , and davies craig fans ... not necessarily in that order !
  4. I have the retro rides mag with the 240 z with the vg30 swapped in it. Keep meaning to scan it in. Good article. He basically went nuts on the suspension and brakes and so forth . If my memory is right i think he had to modify the firewall. I will attempt to scan in and put it in the gallery here. QLD rego rules are tough. Real tough. I bought a rb30 and a rb25 head to do that old rb30dett thing you can do .1500 for engineering approval alone. Of course with a weapon like that you'd need excellent brakes etc. For what its worth the rego authorities here said that if the engine is newer than the car ( which it is ) then all emissions must be met for that engine which means cat's, and other emissions stuff. They even said I might have to uprate my seatbelts !?!?! cos of ADR regs. Anyway they said go to an engineer who would be able to help me more. They have a list of recommended engineers you can talk to but they will charge ( not that I have a problem with that afterall it is an expertise i dont have ) for their time. I sold all the parts off and bought an l28. I wish i had persevered though. Good luck with it all. Qld membership must be growing pretty well.
  5. I hope it doesnt need skimming it was mildly ported and flowbenched and "trued" 6 months ago. The more I read about the cooling issue on cylinder 5 the more i think I need to look at my coolant options. Will check and post pics ( for the people who are voyeuristic about buggered engines !). The radiator is the only thing i havent replaced on this car! Yep I sorted out the bmw at the expense of my head gasket though i think it cant only have been the "race". Damn it felt good though. Worth the 500 odd dollars to get the car on the road again. I need a life
  6. I got a pic from this site http://240z.jeromio.com/head.html for the wedge. I will not let the tensioner pop ... i will not let the tensioner pop. If it does I wont post that it did ! Reading on hybridz the 5th cylinder is the bad cylinder from a cooling point of view and that is where the gasket has gone. I hope it isnt a normal problem because i want to be able to give it a boot. Bmw: just a 330 . Nothing special but I was not having it. I think it was an old one or something because i really shouldnt have beaten it . I got a l28 +30 thou , triple 40 dhla , extractors + 2.5 incher straight through shouldnt have dusted a bmw... in fact it didnt... i have a blown gasket. he gets to go on to his accountants job in a running car ! TDC is for sure. Even going to nikko the chain to the cam gear.
  7. yep! I busted my head gasket. My fault. I take full responsibility. But that bmw needed to be taught a lesson . Anyhow. I searched this forum and other than a thread from 3 years ago which had some info in it but that was more of a "help my head is stuck sort of thing." I also didnt want to resurrect something that old. Soooo... How do I go about lifting the head off an engine that is still in the car? I know about the wedging-the-tensioner tricky thing. I know to check for those 2 little bastard nuts at the front of the engine near the water pump. But anything else that I need to keep an eye on? I really dont want to have to take more than i need to off. Lesson to be learned ? Take on a bmw but be prepared to spray coolant all over your fusible links! ( I did win my head gasket didnt though )
  8. sounds good . < found the thread i need to find about the come and try motorkhana > I still would like a bit of a z meet though. Can I bring along the busted head gasket as proof i have a datto albeit broken ?
  9. I reckon it would be a good idea for people who are interested to put in dates. SOOO I will start. My availability Any saturday or sunday from july 11 ( inclusive ) If there is a vote on a day/time and I aint around, my standing vote would be a 10 am -ish at a bbq spot on sunday ( not wedded to a bbq but i see some meets organised by other clubs and they seem to do that ) . With maybe an option of a pub afternoon at a pub, central to everyone and public transport. Please note mr constabulary I am advocating going home and then going back out sans datto. Mike
  10. Choice! Be good to meet some other zed drivers. I am down ( for now ) for any weekend. Tell us what to bring ( sausages/soda pop --- yeh i said soda pop ! or whatever ). As for a location i have been scoping sites out for something else and the bbq areas around mtcootha are nice ( read good parking ). Also maybe down where the first one was near cuttingedge post production ( other side of the river opposite coro drive ? ). Anyhow count me in. For now cos if a big breasted woman wants to spend time with me on a weekend i am sorry but you fellas come in second .
  11. Cant help about the issue but have a request can you post a pic of the tacho installed ? I need to replace my tacho with a proper working one ( one that works off the -ve instead of the +ve ) and have looked at these.
  12. Hole in the stock headers large enough to poke three fingers through so needed the headers. And I needed them quickly and cheaply. And that is the crux of the matter. If you need headers ( for whatever reason ) but are on a budget these headers are better than not having the car on the road at all. When you get them fitted or fit them yourself make sure you put a flange at the point where headers meet exhaust then you can always refit . And in my own case : I also have a full efi system ( MSns maybe though ) and turbo setup which *may* be fitted in which case spending 1k in headers which then I will need to sell on ( oh yes I'll get 1k for second hand headers ) is stupid.
  13. a. 1k for headers or b. 300 for headers and 700 on a better/accurate ignition system. I believe that I will get more bang for my buck with the second option. I am not rich and cant justify/afford doing both the 1k headers + ignition system. Compromise. Some of us actually have to live by it.
  14. Ok sat down with some car nuts. ( not all zed heads ) and the consensus was ? 350z ( track version ? ) showed up its younger sibling. Which is good cos I can almost afford a 350! To be honest some of the shots made it look like a lowered nissan murano 4wd/suv/wannabe from the bum. Probably due to the widened track and shorter wheelbase. It looked chunky in the butt. Problem is that it's price point puts it into some rarified company ( z4 , audi tt ) or second hand ( porsche 911 , R34 GTR ! ) Overall I hope it does well so there will be a 400z.
  15. The bloke at z bits has heaps of 2+2's. And garages of parts. a bit of an Aladdin's cave there. Nice drive in a zed as well. At sumner park there is datsun wreckers. have a few 280's and a few l28's but mainly other nissans/datsuns. Sorry cant remember the phone number but it is next to the big tiles place up there.
  16. I agree with thomo ... I had to thump the extractors a wee bit to clear the sump lip. But... they sound suhweet and the exhaust guys said that the flange on them just mated straight up ( n42 head with injector holes un filled. )
  17. mtopxsecret6 : NP
  18. How could they not. If you believe the hype ... the 370z fixes the quibbles on an already good platform ( 350z ). I actually hope they dont allude to the older ones. It would be a shame. The 370z can and should stand on its own feet. On a separate note interesting to see a change in presenter and presenting styles makes for a better programme.
  19. single 2.5 inch straight through. Slash cut. No chrome tip. I got the exhaust guys to raise it as close as it could go to the chassis I happen to like raw exhaust style. I know it will go all manky blackstainagey.
  20. I await lurch...
  21. oil breather thing ? I have extractors ( rod_mph ones from ebay ) and my breather has a an extra take off. It is bent to be horizontal to the main breather hole. Clears perfectly. I dont know how the msa extractors look but you could bend the extra pipe to be horizontal. also : I have the extra pipe blocked off and a small filter ( make sure you get one that can be taken apart - monza make one at supercrap auto ) on the big pipe. I built the engine myself and the way i saw it was if nissan designed it like that then there must have been a good reason. If you oil up or the sponge inside gets oily for whatever reason this filter can get clogged and then you get smoke out of it. Hence the reason for one that unscrews and allows for a clean .Cool fun when you are in traffic and people look over and there is smoke puffing out of the bonnet vents !
  22. Whats he supposed to do. Start a new thread and get bent over for not using the search function OR resurrect an old thread and get bent over for resurrecting an old thread. Now this is a good one to resurrect as it has some really good info.
  23. well more work done ... First of all I finally got rid of the wheezy exhaust. 1.75 inch + stock manifold + holes bigger than a dogs arse on a thundery night... Old one --> New one ---> 6 into 2 into 1 headers into a full 2.5inch system . I have a str muffler ( looking through the muffler it looks like a very stretched s ) and a resonator at the end with a slash cut end to it. NO chrome! I also got the exhaust fellas to flatten the exhaust over the diff area and the exhaust is in fact closer to the body than the 1.75 incher. At this point i'd like to say that the service/speed/install at "bowen hills exhaust and car care" on abbotsford rd Brisbane was top notch. Plus the price was very very good. ( no I dont work for them !) Vid of the exhaust note to come soon . And yes the triples are running a wee bit rich.
  24. I agree I find the juxtoposition of the socio economic have-nots and the top echelon of society being played out in a bourgeois SOHO art -space, frankly deplorable. Closer look at the shots looks like the cars are stripped and in some cases the rust is too far gone. Still dont like to see it.
  25. look away if you like muscle cars. http://www.pierogi2000.com/flatfile/schipperjCrash.html Basically this is a machine that slowly crashes 2 cars together and at a certain point the artist stops the machine and calls it done. 'nuff said really.
