We have one at work and take it when going to quote on a resto so we can get a better idea of whats under the paint http://www.fillerdetective.com/ http://www.paintandpanel.com.au/news/gpi-s-filler-detective-elementary-my-dear-assessor they are on evilbay occasionally as well http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DISCOUNTED-FILLER-DETECTIVE-BODY-DAMAGE-DETECTOR-/130692144650 Cheers Paul Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 3, 2012 Administrators Posted August 3, 2012 Don't think I would look at a vintage car without 1 now. So you've used it and find it accurate? Is there any scenario where it doesn't work so well? Quote
Ledge Posted August 3, 2012 Author Posted August 3, 2012 HI Gav we have been using one for a couple of years and yes the machine can been tricked for example if you cut rust out then just pop rivet on a piece of tin underneath then bog over the top the machine will tell you there is bog but cant tell you about the dodgy repairs. This situation has showed its head a couple of times and we get the customer in and show the the issue. But there is nothing on the market that could tell you about the dodgy repairs. It is a basic machine that just tells you distance from surface to metal, ally, lead. hold it on surface press the button that's it, move it around to find the edge of bog simple. The main reason i brought this up is over the last couple of years people have brought us there cars that they paid 50G for cause it was "restored" and they have had up to 25mm of bog NO i didn't miss type 25mm of bog, needless to say these people have been devastated so we give them a card and say call us when it starts falling out. If someone asks me about buying a "restored" car i tell them unless you can see photo's of it being done or can check the car for bog don't touch it. I always say why spend 50g on what may be restored when you can buy a bomb for 5 and spend 50 on it and you will know exactly what you have got. Don't get me wrong guys i am well aware that some people cant be bothered and that's why i shared info on this machine cause its cheap insurance if you do intend to spend big dollars on a "restored car" Paul Quote
C.A.R. Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Thanks for the heads on on it Paul I'm going to add it to the shopping list... Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 4, 2012 Administrators Posted August 4, 2012 Yeah that's exactly why I'm looking to keep my car RX-7. I at least know what history it has (now that's it's had a slight accident) and will know and control exactly how it gets repaired. It's also why I like cars to have original paint because you never know what's hiding under layers of paint jobs. It's very sad when people spend so much money on a restored car and have their heart broken when they find out how it was done. Quote
