Vic change of engine laws

Hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone can clarify the legality of me having a 280zx engine in my 260z.

I am aware that if a swapped engine is an option from the same car its fine, but this is obviously not.

My main concern is if i have to go and get it engineered. The problem with that (besides the cost) is that

it then should count as a modified vehicle, which i wont be able to drive for the next 3 years due to my P

plates...

Of of the members here had exactly the same problem down in Geelong (blowed if i can remember his user name but i met him at Torquay Car Show) he obtained some litreature about the 280Z produce in the US which was an S30 chassis fitted with the 2.8 . . . This allowed him to register the car in Victoria.

The following are Basic Modifications that may be performed without certification providing the

modifications are carried out in compliance with the requirements detailed in Clause 2 General

Requirements:

• Fitting a replacement new, used or reconditioned engine;
  
• Fitting a manufacturer’s optional engine together with any associated components as supplied by the manufacturer for that same model vehicle;
  
• Fitting replacement original equipment engine and exhaust components;
  
• Fitting replacement original equipment, equivalent or better, components that have no influence on engine performance or emissions (e.g. higher volume oil pump than original);
  
• Fitting equivalent engines with an increase of up to 20% of original power.

In all of the above cases, if the engine is modified, it must be certified under the relevant Code

of Section LA.

 

 

NOTE: I should add, that as far as I'm aware each state has it's own legislation in relation to vehicle registration, but that most of the states have similar requirements to the NCOP.  See below...

I just finished a similar conversion on my brother's early model Skyline. Provided you fit the L28 with the stock fuel injection, all stock emission controls and equivalent suspension and brakes (already done) you should have no issue with registration.

 

Tick "optional engine" on the engine number change form, provide the receipt for the engine with your name, sellers name and engine number and present the car for an inspection (check Vicroads for certified offices) and it's done.

i just called Vicroads, who palmed me off to Nissan, who then said, nup, we have nothing to do with it...

Scoota, did he whack in a 280z motor, or 280zx? I think that will be the biggest difference...

280Zx motor and 280Z motor are one and the same, both L28's

Thanks very much for that guys. I think that that link you directed me to should be stickied, I'm finding that information is very difficult to find for

yourself on this site. Maybe some more stickies would help...

Next time try googling what your looking for instead. Just for a laugh type in vic roads 260Z and you'll see that link will come up straight away. I just forget to do it sometimes, i'll never get that 1/2 hour back

Yeah, im generally all for searching myself... but just typing vic roads 260Z got nothing for me...

And having been someone that's read the post before, taking half an hour would suggest that its quite well hidden!

 

I really do appreciate the effort, i just think that there should be some sort of better system for browsing, possibly more stickies

or more refined topic titles (ie. engines has 3 stickies the rest of the information is a huge jumble)...

 

Bust seriously, this has changed my whole view of how im going to build my car, and i really really really do appreciate all the help!

It's all in the wording, you can see that in that thread it vic roads is one word as in VicRoads.
