Hi Guys, I have finally got a few bucks together! Could anyone recommend someone who does engine rebuilding that is trustworthy. I would hope to find someone who has experience and could advise me how to rebuild to get as much as possible out of my L26 motor, is my thinking correct that 2K should get me well on the way?

I know of a couple of competent engine builders it depends on what you need done really.

$2k won't get you too far in terms of huge performance gains. Although the right person will be able to get you as much bang for buck as possible.

My stroker is engine is probably already around the $3,000 mark maybe a bit more and I haven't even done porting and bought gaskets or alot of other things including buying pistons etc.

I have heard of a fellow by the name of Daniel Moore unfortuantely don't have his contact details handy. There is also Errol who used to run datrats.com but his website is down as he closed down his business to my knowledge.

I'm sure one of our members has their contact details though.

I know one other fellow but not sure if he's in a position to do rebuilds at the moment.

Hi gav, Not sure exactly what I need? I can do just about anything to the body of a car but engines leave me a little stumped. when i purchased this car about 8 months ago i just felt the motor was tired. I read lots of posts about how much grunt the zed's have....mine seems to have little down low with a fair bit at the top end. I don't know if that could be related to diff or transmission? I just guessed that the motor has seen a lot of work! any ideas from all that info?

could be your cam?

Yeah could be, L-series engines are generally pretty sturdy. What carbs are you running? The Flat Top SU's generally don't help much mainly because of all the anti pollution gear attached to them and the fact they are 30 years old and probably not recently reconditioned.

Your distributor might also be playing a part.

There are many mods to give the Z a bit more kick. It just depends on what you have to start with. Have you done a compression test? I'd start there.

Hey gav, I had reco 240z carbs and extractors put on 6 months ago at the zshop together with electronic ignition, don't know if this helps. I will try a compression test ASAP I know a mobile mechanic who does this.

You can get a compression tester relatively cheap. Basically you just take the distributor cap off and turn the motor. I can't recall if it's better to remove the spark plugs in all cylinders or not.

If you get different readings across the cylinders you have a compression issue. It's also good to check what colour your spark plugs are, if they are oily then you have either bad compression caused by bad oil rings or your valve stem seals are hardened and leaking.

Disconnect the dizzy cap,

Then take the spark plug out of cyl 1 and crank the engine for a few seconds with the compression tester end pushed (you hold it in) into the spark plug hole.

Write down the compression reading, replace the spark plug and repeat for all other cylinders.

If you have one reading very low compared to the others, then there is a problem.

This is how we did it on my RB not long ago (doesnt have dizzy, but just disconected the coils) with a mate who is a mechanic.

When compression testing there is no point cranking the engine will all the plugs in. You're just making the starter work harder. Additionally, if you have a blown gasket between two cylinders it won't show up as well with the plugs in.

1. Take all the plugs out.

2. Disconnect dizzy cap.

3. Sit someone in the car and tell them to hold the throttle WOT and crank.

4. Count the number of compression strokes (you can hear them) and make sure you crank it for the same number across cylinders.

While the plugs are out its a great time to inspect them and see how your engine is running in general. Guide here: http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/spkplghnbook.htm#We

Ideally you want the insulator to be a light golden brown I believe.

As for Z's having `grunt', I can't say that has been my experience. They are a small displacement inline 6 based on a 50yo design, you can't expect too much out of them.
