cj260znut
Have recently purchased a 1976 datsun 260z 2+2, last wednesday actually. It has rust in a small section of both chassis rails, the LHR quarter panel, both side panels & the RHR panel behind the rear coupe window & hatch (dog leg?) Anyway, what or who is good for repairing rust problems like this? I don't want to bog it because someone before me has already done that badly. Ideally I want to cut the rust out & replace the damaged panels. Any ideas?
C.A.R.
I can do all that for you, BUT it sounds like it's the sort of Zed that needs to be taken back to bare metal to see what all the issues are. How big is your budget for rust repairs?
Sirpent
Lurch is right, ask Maygrz about his before it was blasted, didn't look that bad, if someone else has had a crack at it with multiple tins of Bog you are better off stripping it totally back first before committing to discovering hidden rust and repair spots as you go along, its like death by a 1000 cuts. And as everyone will say, doubt you will find anyone quicker and more precise than Lurch for this kind of work outside of an actual body shop who specialise in these cars. cj260znut
Yeah, Im cdurrently in the process of stripping it back to bare metal, I don't want to think I'v fixed it, only for rust to pop back up 5 years later. Not sure on budget, I wanna do it properly, I don't really care how long it will take me. Im just stiocking up on the replacement panels I need. There is so far only one piece that will have to be cut & re-manufactured.
Quandary
Good that you're having a go yourself, or at least starting it. A sad realisation I've found with the 2+2 is a panel beater's price for a full body fix from bare metal up to the primer stage is more than the cars are worth, if they are even willing to take a second look at it. It's odd but even fibreglass panels work out cheaper than re-fabricating steel. I'll be interested to know how you're going with it over time. wally57
Can't agree enough with Lurch. Make sure you know what your in for before you get too far into it. Two years ago I bought a 260z 2+2 that looked pretty good at first, then I started stripping it down and put it on a rotiserie. So far i've replaced or carried out major rust repairs on; - Both front chassis Rails. - Radiator Support Panel. - Sections of both inner front guards. - Both floor pans and underside chassis rails. - The left hand sade of the firewall. - The bottom of the wiper motor trough. - Both sills. - Both Doglegs. - Lower sections of both rear quarter panels. - Top half of the left hand rear quarter panel. - Roof. - Roof rear support beam. - Complete rear tail light and lower beaver panel. Like you I won't just bog it up. You probably won't be able to afford to pay someone to do the work, best advice is listen to the guys on this site who have done it and can help teach you and learn how to panel beat and make your own panels. At the end of the day it's worth it. Wally Groundhog
