custommade Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 So this will be my first engine rebuild. Pulled a piston out today to check things out do some measuring. I was going to just do a hone job and some new rings, but after looking at the end gap of the old rings, I'm not sure ill get away with it. the gap is about 3mm, nowhere near the 0.23-0.38 the manual says it should be I really didn't expect the proper ring gap to be so small thought the rings would expand and seize but after looking around the net seems to be the norm. (like I said first time engine rebuild) As I said before, I just wanted to do a ring and bearing job, it still has the original std size pistons and they seem OK but the piston to bore clearance was out a fair bit too. I don't have a cylinder micrometer so haven't checked the bore size I was hoping someone might tell me that its just what happens when the rings were out, just get some new rings in std size?? What do you guys think? Quote

Linton Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 can't see a big ridge at the top thats usually what you would expect to see if the bores were badly worn, It would be interesting to try a new ring and recheck the gap, just a thought Linton Quote

jamo240 Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Whoa! That looks like the gap between my front teeth, and I can eat corn off the cobb through a picket fence... I'd aim for something a little tighter than that if you can...ideally you want to be measuring the gap with a feeler gauge rathern than a tape measure. Cheers Jamo Quote
