Custom mid mounted speaker / storage box

I’ve really been enjoying the sound of my engine whilst driving in the Zed but having no stereo at all is getting to me. Part of the installing process obviously involves finding a spot for the speakers. I discussed this issue with my brother who decided he would make up a custom speaker/sub box that would go behind the seats between the strut towers. The speakers would sit behind each seat and there would be a storage compartment in the middle.

 

He finished it today and brought it round. I think it looks awesome. Now I just need to get some speakers and a head deck.

This is what I was planning also but to incorporate the strut towers as well with a 15 degree slant on the front face so the seats reclined wouldnt hit the upper edge.

 

I want to store a dry cell battery ECU and all the fuse relay systems in it and then enclose some speakers also.

Well done!...reminds me of a 2 seater Z32 when its covered like that. I'd put one in if I had a deck.. but engine is too noisy so I don't bother with a stereo anymore.

Couple of questions, why did it need to be so tall? If it were shorter, your seats could recline that little bit further back and you would still be able to reach over it and get stuff that is sitting in the boot. Also it wouldn't stand out so much.

 

Might as well go the whole hog and use that "storage compartment" for a nice doof doof subwoofer

thats very similar to the one i knocked up for my zed when i was actually driving it (many moons ago ) Mine was just tall enough to fit a 10" sub in it in the centre between the seats and had the speakers mounted on the side just below the quarter windows, over the wheel arches.

the amplifier was mounted on the face, just behind the drivers seat.

The top edge of the box was the same height as the rear strut tops, so it'd just clear under a strut brace that i was planning to make.

The leading lower edge of the box butted up against the factory metal lip behind the seats, so it stopped it from moving anywhere.

It was very good being able to move the seats right back, it really helpded with getting in and out of the car, particularly in tight parking spots.

If anything, the internal volume was too big for a single sub, i should have incorporated some storage space into it.

While it was quite nice at 'seperating' the cabin from the hatch, even at the lower height it was still a pain at times to reach over for things, necessitating actually having to get out and open the hatch.

That box is long gone, used for scrap in another project.

I dont know what im going to do this time, but im thinking along the line of custom mounts over the wheel arches for the speakers, the sub mounted in the passenger rear cavity of the hatch and the amp hidden somewhere.

At least then i'll still be able to use the storage boxes under the floor.

Yeah this one is slanted to the front but since you mentioned it it could be a little lower height wise. There is a pretty decent storage area inside. You cant really reach the hatch compartment now but it does stop what ever is in the back rolling around or ending up in the cabin  when you brake hard. I have a fire extinguisher too which I was going to mount inside the box.

Dont put your extinguisher in the box.

if the worst happens and you need it, its precious more seconds to grab it.

its also 'out of sight, out of mind'

 

As one bloke explained to my dad 20 something years ago during a Lotus Elan club meet (and me as a young impressionable boy remembered)

"having a car catch fire, you only have an instant to decide, fight it, or run.

Having a fiberglass car makes it a much smaller instant. Keep your extinguisher where you can reach it while strapped in your seat, it may save your life one day."

 

Id have to ask my dad about him, but i do vaguely remember someone mentioning that this knowledgable bloke had quite a few years of racing history under his belt.

From my perception back then, he seemed to know everything about anything and then some....

 

Common sence would dictate that either just behind the passenger seat, or on the side of the passenger trans tunnel would be an ideal spot for an extinguisher.
