Whittie Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Gav, I've been on tonnes of forums where your first 3-5 posts have to be approved by mods, why not implement this? That way bots can spam all they want, it won't appear on the forum unless an admin agrees to post it. It could be open to all mods, and then you can leave account delete ability to just yourself. I don't know the logistics, but doesn't seem that hard to implement?? Quote

I'm deleteing any posts by 'Bennypars' now - I'm also deleteing any posts by anyone called 'Ben' or 'Benny', just to be sure... FWIW Gav is the only person who can delete/ban users (which is slightly annoying), so we'll just have to wait for gav to delete the account. I know I post cr*p sometimes, but please Lurch, let me be! The spambot posting these links or that some people respond to the threads or create new ones like there is someone sitting there that might say "Oh, ok, I'll leave you alone now." I am an admin on a couple sites, one of which was getting hit everyday, sometimes several times a day by spambots, mostly for porn, but occasionally pills and other such items. I tried deleting and banning the IP addresses of each one, and that got tiresome, especially when I went back through the registered members and noticed the thousands of spambot accounts. Most were just in active. What I noticed was that most of these accounts were g-mail accounts, so I simply disallowed any new members with g-mail accounts from registering. It was an option in the Admin panel. Might be something to look into, common e-mail account providers. Quote
Scando Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I put in a challenge question on registration for the site. The question is "Are you human?" Most of the time spammers don't change this value and I just delete the account. However I've seen several legitimate members sign up and get this question wrong. That cracked me up. Maybe you should put in a third option for "unsure". Quote

You can usually tell a spammer by the email address, the hostname (very rarely an Australian 1 like telstra, optus etc...), the country, the username (which rarely makes sense), the forum signature is always a link, they almost always enter a website (in the website field) etc.. I'm sure Sulio, Lurch and Steve will be able to spot them over time. I think most people just fill in forms on auto-pilot and miss the "Are you spam?" question haha. Quote
